Akai AA-1200 Receiver

I've scoured the Internet to find some pix or data on the Akai AA-1200 receiver. Not too much info available.

I've included some pictures of my (mint) unit.

This is an interesting and seemingly quite rare box (I've never seen another nor has anyone else I know). Dual power supply, 120wpc, fairly simple design. Tuner seems quite good. Sound is good to my ear although I'm using a newer Pioneer VSX-9500S as my main right now.

Couple of tricks you don't see everyday...bass, mid & treble tone controls are separate for each of the 2 channels and FM muting has a level control. The output meters have an adjustable scale - either 3 watt and 150 watt max. I think it's a cool unit.

I agree...that IS a nice looking unit and I like the "nudies" of the insides! Dual transformers and a nice layout. Hopefully you can find some information on it. I'd be curious to know what the power rating is on that receiver. Some of the controls remind me of Yamaha and the meters of many other Japanese units of that era.

Looks like a more sophisticated, black-faced AT2600! Only Akai receiver I owned was a smallish silver jobber. 45wpc i think, but it was plenty for me. Nice find!!

Same here. I had the AA-1200 but it is now long gone. Silver as well never thought it came in Black. If mine was Black I would have kept it.....!!

Nicely laid out and looks like simple design. Akai some years ago made a receiver but, I do not remember the model number that showed Akai could be a player if it wanted to but they seemed to concentrate more on the tape market and less interested in bringing in the receivers.

I have an 1175 and a 1200 - great underappreciated receivers. The black ones here in N.A. are fairly rare - I believe that a few were sold in Canada and overseas, but none in the US. I also have a few AM-2400/AT-2400 separates. The AM-2400 was the first amp I ever bought...

I bought my Akai AA-1200 silver faced receiver December 1977 when I was 18 years old so I have it almost 30 years. About 7 years ago one channel blew, I purchased original transistors for it but never got around to fixing it. Its almost a shame, I took it apart back then and it is still apart on my unused work bench. I was recently thinking about finally fixing the amp. I bought the a copy of the service manual for it a few months ago.

Its a kick-a$$ receiver. I had it connected back in the day to 4 Lafayette Criterion 2002+ speakers, which I still have. I bought them November 1977...

Here is my girlfriend who is now my wife of 22 years standing next to my Akai around 1984. To bad it was not a full view of the receiver and my setup. Notice all the 8-tracks....

PS: The truth finally came out about 3 weeks ago, it was my wife who played the Akai at max volume when the right channel blew...

The aa-1200wil not play on FM, what could be the cause of this?
