Akai AM-U41 intermittent channel help!

This amp came free with a turntable I wanted. Right side channel didn't work left was scratchy. Original 1982 unit that sat. I cleaned everything I could with d5 and now the music comes out of both channels. Except when I shut it off and restart then I have to surge the right speaker side to get it going again. Even bumping the amp can kill the channel. I'm new to Audiokarma and I'm a huge fan of the sweet warm sound from this Akai. .007 thd! 55 wpc! I'd like to see it working well, I almost junked it then thought I'd learn on it. Thanks in adv

Akai's from that era are just "burners" if you ask me. If it works: let it work, in the garage or whatever. Otherwise, use it for parts or just make somebody happy with a free pair of STK units.

Not much literature on the 1982 akai stuff, certainly looks cheap but I was wondering about sound quality in that era.
 
Could be a relatively easy fix, like a cold solder joint. Even some of the cheaper Akai stuff from this era can sound surprisingly good and this looks much better engineered than the cheap stuff. You’ve already said you like the sound, that’s a win.

For me the big downer would be the slider volume control.
 
Would look for dry joints... - also check relay contacts.

Looks like the PCB is coated in oil - would clean it up w/ pcb/circuit cleaner.

shouldnt be a difficult fix

I agree. This little amp has some very respectable specs, according to Hifi Engine. But that slider volume control screams "cheap and cheesy"...
