I picked this cd player up recently and although the laser appears shot as it won't read a disk it's a pretty cool machine. Before this one I'd never seen a cdp that loaded the way this one does, see the pics.

I wish this thing worked, I'd love to know how it sounds and performs. Anyone out there that has/had this machine or one the same that was branded differently? What are you impressions of this very early cdp? It seems reasonable well built and is bloody huge for a single disk cdp.

Hi,

Nice looking machine. Akai made great cassette decks, among other gear. What are the problems you see? Is the CDP able to read the table of contents once you insert a CD? Does it spin al all?

Nope, the player won't read the TOC. It spins but that's about it.
 
IC you found a little gem of a CDP. The Akai CD-D1 was actually a rebadged Kyocera DA-01 I had posted some info on Here at AK.

They are great 1st Gen players and sound pretty dang good for being 26 years old. I listen to mine every few days to keep it in shape. I would keep an eye out for some of the others that were rebadged from the DA-01:

Micro Seiki CD-M1
Phase Linear 9500
Rotel RCD780
Tensai TAD-2000

I have the service manual pdf if you need it. I wouldn't blame the laser until you've checked everything else. There's a LOT that can make a CD player not read discs. Often, a complete electrical and mechanical alignment will help these first generation players, even if the laser is past its best. It's worth trying since you'll have to re-align it if you replace the pickup.

If anyone knows of a source for these pickups, please let me know. It uses the same pickup as many first generation CD players, so I'd jump at the chance to buy some spares. I already have an NEC CD-803 that had its laser ruined by someone turning up the laser power.
 
I became aware of that Akai's existence a few months ago. Since I love old, archaic looking CDPs, it went on my "to get someday" list.

Indeed, that's the plan...long-term plan. I'll get the CD-73 fixed first then focus on the Akai :thmbsp:
