Akai CS-703D belt replacement

Hi. My Akai CS-703D stops playing, fast forwarding and rewinding several seconds after starting the function. It sounds good until it stops playing.

Research here and other sites indicates new belts and a general clean and lube may solve the problem. I opened the deck up and do not see any obvious belt issues other than they are buried very deep inside the very rugged little transport mechanism. They are the original belts. I bought the machine new in the '70s. I have ordered new belts.

I have the service manual but belt replacement is not covered. Would anyone be able to provide me some guidance or direct me to a write up on doing a belt replacement on an older Akai?

Thanks!

I don't have that particular model but having worked on several transports, it sppears your tape control is detecting no tape movement and will therefore shut down.
Typicaly such problems are related to counter belts or tape sensors.
As far as diy belt replacement is not always included in sm for reasons that the mechanisms may have subtle differences and not worth the extra trouble and or worth the time or effort. These manuals are written for what we call in the trade "trained personnel". If you don't feel comfortable doing it, a local repair shop might be able to help.
Good luck to you and if you have other questions please post, we'll try and help.
