Akai CS-707D cassette deck problems on REW/FFWD

Hi guys! I've got a CS-707D deck from Akai and it works quite for playing but somehow it doesn't perform well for rewinding and fast forward operations. It either goes sloooow or gets stuck. Specially in the case of FFWD it seems to react (sometimes) when you press down hard (there's a like an extra bit you can go when pressing harder).

Is there something in particular I can look at? Thanks!

Have the belts been replaced yet ?
Hi @kermit z, I got the unit from a technician who was supposed to have serviced the deck. I am not in touch with him anymore. I opened up the unit and saw a couple of small belts and a bigger one. And one small belt with a piece of tape fell off somewhere (I assume it was one he replaced, stuck n somewhere in the cabinet?). I am a total noob on this but I might get the part and change it if it's only the belt. Thanks.

Ah, well one would assume this was replaced then. Also, any gummed up controls should also been done as well. Hard to say though without confirming. I have a Nakamichi RX-202 that has problems with FF or RWD due to the idler wheel. I have the wheel to replace it, but been too busy working. Maybe someone will come along with experience with that deck :)

Great Kermit z I'll be waiting for your experience! Thing is I could not find a service manual for this little boy yet either. So I'll see what I can do. Thanks!

Greenflash,

From your description of the problem it sounds like a worn out/wrong size rubber cog or belt. Its possible someone tried to fix it using wrong belt. If you post a picture of the cassette deck behind the panel, I might be able to identify the drive mechanism. Many Akai models share identical mechanisms across different models.

Thanks @goanlisten I got these pictures please let me know if I spotted the wrong area or if you need me to zoom on some spot.

Ok greenflash, it turns out that Akai CS-707D csssette drive is similar to CS-705D. So you should go to "www.hifiengine.com" and download the service manual for CS-705D and that will get you started.

Good luck to ya!

Sorry to revive this old thread, and I wish I had access to the manual. Hifi engine does not recognize my old password and log on and won’t allow new accounts.
So my issue is that this deck goes forward and plays but does not rewind. This belt is for fast forward, what drives the reel to reverse? A belt ? I don’t t see anything that it would hook up to . Help please . Thank you for input and possibly a link to the manual .
