Akai GX-1820D No sound in reverse

Just picked this RTR up at a garage sale yesterday. Mechanics seem fine, case is in very good condition. It does need the pots cleaned as the left channel can drop in and out but is now mostly out. However, I have found that there's no sound on either channel when reversing the tape (playing right to left). Bad tape head? Have limited time this weekend but will try to get it apart.

Edit: I have found a service manual online for a fee but I'd like to decide if this is a fixer-upper before committing. I don't mind fixing transistors/capacitors if needed. Just don't want to spend time and money on a machine with a part that's unobtanium.

Ok, so I found a thread here about the slider switches in the tape transport mechanism. Maybe this isn't a lost cause. Need to make time to get inside it.
