Akai GX-267D - low volume. and schematic.

Hi,
picked up a GX-267D couple days ago and the problem with this deck is that the "tape" playback volume is very low. VUs barely move. However, this is not a problem when switching to "source". Volume and VU movement is just fine when input is switched to source.
Before digging down into it I thought I'd check if this is a known issue with these Akai decks ? and what is a possible fix ?

Also, I got the SM but it does not have the schematic. Anyone know how/where I can find the schematic or if another deck's schematic can be used as-is ?

Please advise.
Thanks!

I have a GX-267D and had a similar issue. There are some transistors, 2SC458's, that are notorious for failing. They have no OEM replacements. But I used OnSemi part number MPSA18RLRAG's, although you have to twist legs. If you don't want to bend the leads around you can use a 2SC2240, which is also a very good transistor, but the OnSemi is quieter. I also have a schematic if you PM me an email address.

PM sent, thanks.

Looking at gx-266d schematic I suspected the same area based on the symptoms. Would be great to get the actual 267 schematic.

Btw I found the 2sc458 at mcmelectronics and also at futurelec. I think I saw hitachi and Panasonic as mfg.

thought I'd check before I start - is there a shortcut or easier eay to get the bottom amp board out ? or do I have to get the sides off, the feet off and the lower front panel to access it ?

Get a hold of Steve Bender. He may have everything you need. Steve is a member here (slbender). His website is: slbender.exactpages. com. Steve has tons of information and parts for Akai decks.

Seems to be made the normal Akai way :

sides off, front facia off - now some screws holding the amp section should be removed.

But do use your eyes - there are cables to take care of.

I didn't remove the board when I did mine, since everything can be soldered or traced from underneath.
