First off, I am new to this site, and also new to R2R. However I do have a slight background in electronics (nothing extensive).
I am currently in the process of restoring an Akai GX 280D. When I receives the unit it was in full working order yet the playback volume was significantly lower than the recording volume. After checking head alignment and the playback amp voltage, the repair manual indicates to replace a diode and/or a resistor that I could only locate on the servo control board. My initial thought was that these components would have been on the playback amp board, but I could not locate them there. I tried replacing the diode and transistor on the servo board and saw no difference. I then replaced the newer components again with the original diode and transistor as there was no change.
This is where my new problem arose. Now when I power the machine, the motors begin spinning (in forward) without the forward button being pressed. The tension in the tape varies (the reel lets some slack in the tape and then takes it up again). When I press a button (forward, f.f., reverse, or rewind), the fuse blows.
I am wondering if I shorted something on the servo circuit. Also, I was wondering if the position of the sensor adjacent to the servo motor had any effect on this. This sensor was moved slightly when I was trying to access the circuit board with my screwdriver. I tried my best to position as it originally had been.
Also, if the playback volume persists to be lower than the recorded volume, should I replace the playback amps?
