Man audiokarma is really bad.. after reading the tape section I've been on the search for a cassette deck.. I've seen a lot of crappy decks around, however today was different i spotted some wood and silver and noticed it was cassette deck, in fact it was Akai GXC model deck... reading the stuff on AK i knew that GX models were the higher end. So i picked it up it was in great condition..

the next thing i did was get some cassettes found some cream, pink floyd, the smiths, peter tosh, and some maxell xlII 90's, and sony CD-IT pro tapes.. all for .10 cents a piece...

the gxc-730d was 30 bucks i hope i didn't over pay...

now i need a reel to reel player...:D

back to my new tapes..

I dont know how to record on this thing..lol...

Don't you just press forward play and rec at the same time? No manual but here's the specs.
I've never heard those glass heads but I hear they last a long time. Good get in my opinion... I hope you get her to record. :music:

Nice deck and now you're hooked :)

To record, press play and rec at the same time. Use pause to hold the tape until ready to go. Set the record levels so the meters don't peak over about 2 db into the read, release the pause when all ready and your taping :)

hmm thanks, but the vu meters don't move..on my receiver i switch dubbin 2>1 and stereo hmmm... maybe i have the cables mixed up...

I feel so stupid but i had to say i got it working.. and man do my tapes sound amazing recording some albums.. testing what kind of recording. But i;m amazed..

Yeah you have a great deck from the looks of it. I say you have those 1985 model Maxell XLIIs, I have some of those, they sound BRILLIANT, better than most Type II tapes made today. The Sony CDits are pretty good, the ones I have have no screws in the shells, so if the tape breaks I cannot open it! GRRR!

I've got one as well and it never gets the use it deserves. Mine has a fair amount of mechanical noise and as I've got a few other nice decks I'll probably never get around to investigating. Can you tell me if yours plays tapes in reverse? Not sure if this is a feature or a fault. :D

just got mine out, and it works fine including reverse play and auto reverse, but it don't wanna fast rewind. it is one nice chunk of machinery

I also have an AKAI thats been setting for a couple years that needs TLC. It plays but the meters are intermittent in the performance, like I said, TLC. It's a 570D and deserves to be brought back. It has just slightly better high frequency response than my Kenwood KX-1030. If I had no Kenny running you could bet your bottom dollar that that AKAI would be cleaned up and running. By the way, it was my best score EVER at $3.00. Great score you made and enjoy. I have never seen your model before and thought all GXC's had touch logic (solenoid)but I guess not.

i open them by using a screwdriver and a hammer and gently smack the screwdriver w hammer at several points along the sonically welded seams and then pry them open like a clam shell. you dont wanna hurt the tape inside so be 'gentle'.

you have to use a new shell now.
i buy cheap 6 or 10 packs of maxell low bias c60s or c90s, unscrew them, dump the tape and put the sony tape inside the maxell shell.
works like a charm!
did about 300 '70s memorex tapes that way-five years ago. they're like new now.

Out jacks on the Akai deck goes to input on the receiver/amp or your aux jack.
In on your Akai deck goes to the output on the receiver/amp.

Dont use the dubbing 2>1 switch. Instead record something off the radio to see if the meters move. Try a tape and make sure you have set the switches to the right type of tape.

Looks like a great deck. Enjoy!
