Akai Reel to Reel

hi Fellow AKers can anybody help with info on an Akai GX-625 i am looking at ,,,owner says had it since new still has original box ,,hubs empty 10; reel and manual ,, he also says he has some blank as well as pre-recorded tapes ,, can any body ball park me on value and whether its worth the 175.00 he,s asking ,,, don,t know much about r2r except i know my system won,t be complete without one ,,thanks in advance for any help

I just did a completed auctions search on ebay, lowest was $271cdn, average about $375cdn, about $320US. BTW, seems the blackfaced ones go for more moolah! :yes:

If you can, fully test it out before you buy it. The Akai reel to reels sometimes have problems with the preamps and other electronic issues. I bought a used Akai GX-280 D SS and after the first few minutes of playing great, it has had issues. I'm not sure about the reliability of the model you are looking at, but try to check it out through a Web search and see if that model has known issues.

Sorry for lack of detail. In my mind, you would want to listen to a tape to make sure it sounds OK. You want to be sure the RtR is running at the correct speed and that the channels work. Also, if you could record something onto a tape.

Others may suggest other things to look for, and I would suggest you read some of the threads in the AK forum for Turntables & Tape.

Akai 625d

I have an Akai 625D and they are a very nice machine. Has the capabilities if it works of rewinding and slowing down with about 20 left to stop at 0. Mine doesn't do that, the computer chip is not working.

The unit itself will play and record very well. There are issues with the transistors going noisy, and you can usually hear that if you use headphones. The nice part is that the transistors are replaceable and can bring the unit back to really good levels for recording and playing.

If you would like more information about the transistors, give me a shout and I will point you in the right direction.

Here's a little about the transistors. I have never checked into this, but I'm going to guess this gentleman's prices are way out of line. I have a 635D waiting for work, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Also lot's of info about Akai decks, with pics, on this site.
