Hiya.
I picked these interesting little speakers up off the Facebook Marketplace a few days ago for $20 for be pair.
I figured why not since I need inexpensive speakers for the analog setup I’m bringing with me to college. I’m well aware that in terms of hi-fi or audiophile Sound, Akai wasn’t exactly known for making good stuff outside of Reel To Reels, especially speakers. Unlike a lot of the same speakers from the same time period, these aren’t Kabuki speakers, and the drivers and bass seem to be actually decent upon listening. Supposedly the tweeters were rebranded Pioneer, which sounds quite interesting especially during that timeframe being their golden age (at least for their receivers and turntables, I can’t speak for their speakers - but I know that Pioneer did make some great speakers in that timeframe)
But any information that I would find was slim to none, if any. I can’t even find the manual for this online, a few questions posts but nothing that really explains a personal experience with these speakers.
Some crisp highs and nice lows, midrange leaves a little to be desired but overall im surprised with how good they sound for Akai. I figured with solid wood cabinets and that gorgeous steel trim, they’d be a good $20 find. Throw in a thrift store equalizer and I’m sure I could get good use from them.
So can anyone else shed some light on these speakers? Did I find a diamond in the rough, or some really pleasant looking party speakers (I.E. - speakers I shouldn’t care about keeping later on/unremarkable)?
