Akai X201D R2R, any good?

Yes, that's a decent price. Around here there is a guy who fixes them and sells them, the average price is $125. This model is not a solenoid operated deck, so you start and stop, rewind etc, by moving those levers. I had a Kenwood deck that used the same system and it wasn't hard to use.

Ok, it's mechanical. My (broken) Teac uses solenoids. I think I may pick it up, even if it isn't a steal. No steals to be had in Maryland ever, it seems. I assume the sound quality is good, even for a middle of the line deck. The reels of tape that go along with it are a bonus as well. :D

I've always like the Akai decks. They seemed to be very solid units, since this unit is in your town, you should be able to try it out to be sure the transport is working and the heads are OK.

Good luck!

Sent the seller an email, still waiting for a response, though I wasn't expecting one since it is Christmas week. Hopefully I'll snag it by this weekend, even though it isn't a steal by any means.

Just snagged it today... it's in fantastic condition! Looks brand new. Only a couple blemishes here and there. The seller found 13 reels of tape to go with it, and the original manual to boot!

He demonstrated it, and it worked fine, so I'm happy! I tried to get the old (and I mean OLD) Sennheisers I heard the tape with, but to no avail. It seems small for a reel to reel, but it will fit nicely in my system while I'm fixing the Teac. I'll probably post some pics in the tape forum later.

I have an X-200D. Those little guys are tanks! Don't forget to clean & demagnetize the tape path.

Already rubbed it down with 91% alcohol (except the pinch roller, of course, which came clean with the help of some Stolichnaya :D). I don't have a demag unit for it, but I should get one, shouldn't I? And it is indeed a tank. What did you use to get off the pause and tape speed switch covers? Is it standard torx? None of my bits fit it.

I just went to look at mine, apperantly, I've never had the face plate off of it, as they are chewed to hell!
I can look through my X 100 carcasses and see if I still have knobs/set screws. I could have sworn that they were allens.
I would be on the lookout for a demagnetizer for sure.

I picked up one of these today. I found it on CL for $35. I'm guessing that is a steal but I can't see how it compares to the link above because it is dead. At any rate, it is in very nice condition. The cosmetics are almost like new. All functions work and none of the switches seem to be scratchy. It even came with the original cover (all latches and hinges are 100%), three true metal take up reels, two blank tapes and a few recorded mix tapes that I'm going to pitch. Through the headphone jack (which I'm guessing is an afterthought, it doesn't even have a volume control on it) the sound is good but not great. I'm hoping for better results when I clean, demag and hook it up to my system. Now I just have to find a thrift store food dehydrator to bake me some old tapes.

I saw that unit on CL, too bad I'm in Maryland this weekend. Nice snag! One of the smaller r2r units I've seen. Very solid. PM inbound.
