problem using akg headphones for laptop

hi,
i've recently bought a akg 701 headphones and they're really nice sounding headphones, but have one problem.

when i'm using it for the laptop to watch a movie or listen to music, it has very low volume level compared to any other earphones such as ipod earphones and other cheap ones i have around.

is this due to impedance mis-match? or what could be the problem? one other thing i can possibly think of is the jack adapter being kinda bent a little when i accidentally pushed it whiled plugged in.

i'd appreciate any input on this matter.

Most of the newer laptop's have very low audio output, so you'll have to stick with the most efficient headphones you can get. Something to do with kid's going deaf while listening to portable electronic's, law suites, ext. I sometimes do presentations using a portable PA system I put together using self powered Roland Micro-Monitors. It's mostly with a microphone, but sometimes mix in stuff from my laptop. Had to go inside the Rolands and change out some input resistors to make them play loud enough. Tried other powered speakers, and had to do the same thing.
 
Nice headphones. I used to own one but sold it to fund a better one AKG K1000:music:. Anyways you really need a headphone amplifier to make it sing and see its full potential. Go check head-fi.org and read and decide which headphone amp is best suited for you headphone. good luck.:D
 
i guess it was inevitable that i had to get yet another amp:D i had seen some diy tubed headphone amps before... off to search them now.
 
this thought just crossed my mind while i was looking at different plans for headphone amps....

how hard is it or is it possible to convert an existing poweramp to have headphone output? or one of my passive preamp to have the headphone output?

i'm thinking if i can convert one of the magnavox amps, it'd be cool.
 
what I would do is pick yourself up a nice vintage beefy receiver and use the headphone output. Normally those old guys have the main speaker outs wired to the headphone jack with a couple resistors to rein in the level. Honestly, I had a sweet Antique Soundlabs MG head otl III dedicated headphone amp (tubed) that actually sounded less detailed and rich than the headphone output from a Vector Research VR-3000 I had (man, I really really really regret selling that thing now...crap). And I couldn't turn the output up past 11'o clock without it reaching ear-bleeding loudness levels.
 
Good choice on the headphones... I just purchased the K702s last week. I must say that I love them. I was surprised to find out that my Macbook Pro can power them relatively well. I would like to attempt to build a headphone amp though, if there was a basic design for someone like me that has never attempted such a build, but is reasonably proficient with a soldering iron.
