AKG K240 Butchered

I am such an idiot.

It's a long story, but I had to do a deep clean of my AKG K240 because of asbestos contamination... don't ask.

In the process of doing so I poked through the 6 black mesh-covered holes surrounding the driver. I didn't notice anything at the time but there's a good chance this has deteriorated their performance as they're supposed to be there for resonance.

Is there a reasonable way to fix this? I am in the process of purchasing a mid-production AKG K240 Sextett to use instead, but it would be nice to restore these other ones if possible.

I'd look for a matching K240 and just cannibalize it for parts.

You could see if Full Compass has any replacement baffles listed on their website but I bet that's a long shot.
 
I can't cannibalize the baffle for the AKG K240 Monitors as it's a thin, black, fibrous membrane that's glued very securely around the main driver.

For now I used some very thin medical tape that at least is a match for the thickness of the paper. Covering all 6 holes sounded too muddy, as they definitely don't offer the same resonant properties as the original baffle, but I came up with a decent compromise by leaving the top 2 holes uncovered.

Hopefully can find some replacement baffles at some point, and I look forward to hearing the Sextetts soon...

So I have been listening to the Sextetts the past couple days...

Came with some scratches on the decal from foam replacement. Tried to dremel them out; marginal improvement. I really like how they sound on the Pioneer SX-424 I keep in the bedroom... very responsive and detailed, but they sound muddy in the mids on the SA-6800 I use for phono. At their best it's as though each passive driver carries its own instrument. Will have to keep listening, wonder what your experience has been like?

They're not perfect by any means. But I really like their timbre. They're very musical.
