akg k240 headphone cable needed.

Hi, lust picked up a pair of AKG k240 studio cans for 5$ without the cable.

I looked around online, and the original AKG cables sell for 30$. too much money for such a piece of crap.

I saw on ebay, that some make, and sell cables for these out of better components, for cheaper.

so now I am challenged to make my own cable for the same price or less, using even better components.

I have many very nice canare 1/8th plugs, and want to find some wire, and good quality mini XLR connectors, something like canare or neutrik.

any ideas where I can source the XLR connector?

anyone have an idea of the wiring for it?

AKG K240 classic vintage...

I suggest you have a browse around the web with regards to these...

If they are a 20+ year old 600ohm impedance set of HP's they may in fact be true High End equipment.

(Equivalent to $200 to $500 current units) - the K240 / K340's were ultimately replaced by the K501 and then K701.

The downside is that like current 600ohm units they need the right amping to give their best, and without that they can sound like crap.

You should post some pics so people can help identify the model...

K240S are certainly NOT crap. The monitor version with the M designation were 600 ohms, the studio or S were 55 ohms.

I am quite certain the plug is proprietary, but I could be wrong. Either way, unless the pair you bought are ragged and worn out, they are certainly worth the $30 to buy a proper cable. $35 for a pair of neutral and revealing cans is a great value.

The mini-XLR isn't proprietary, but it certainly can be a little hard to find a good one.

My suggestion? Buy the cable from this guy:

A Switchcraft miniXLR and a Neutrik plug with decent wiring. I'd find it hard to do that for less than $18 + $7 shipping.

The cable is definitely stiffer than the OEM, but its also a little thicker.

This is very very true--I"ve got abeta22 in the works as a result of the fact that most amp headphone amp circuits can't handle heavy loads like these.

Very very true--Ture, there have been many, many iterations of these phones, but since it uses a mini xlr I'm willing to bet that they're not the Sextett model... :scratch2:

I've waiting on a new driver for my LP Sextetts after I botched a recable :sigh:
