AKG k240 sextett driver replacement

Yesterday was a bad day.

The left driver of my beloved k240s (that dad had bought in the early 80s) died.
Unfortunately the cable is in good condition and the radiators are still intact.
I removed the driver, tested with other cable/source and yup, it is pretty much fried.
The right one still works.

Now the question is: where can I find a replacement?
According to a service manual, the part I'm searching for probably is 2030Z0010, I have the gray/yellow version.

Google and Ebay(EU) came up disturbingly empty.

Another solution would be to find a modern equally good -or better- driver and replace the pair.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

That's a modern(ish) part number for the DKK32 type driver. For the gold-cup version "K240 Monitor".

It's likely that as the baffle design changed over the years, the driver design did as well. The sextett version is way old. Harman Professional service might still have DKK32 drivers but they are unlikely to be the same version as your existing driver. If they do have a 600-ohm DKK32, it's probably the K240-M version.

There were even 3 generations of the sextett with different characteristics, and i don't personally know how much was the driver and how much was the baffle.

I think in most incarnations the K141 has the same driver as the K240, so if you don't want to pay the sextett premium, it might be worth tracking down a silver K141. I recently bought one on that auction site for $25. There are two offered now, but for $50 each.

You could do some digging in the big sextett thread over at head-fi, maybe someone, probably "Fitz", determined which drivers are exactly the same.

If you just want two drivers that are mostly the same as the original two, you could maybe look for a K240-M that has a sextett baffle that has just filter patches instead of radiators? dunno.

Maybe someone over at head-fi has sextett parts for sale?

I have the silver version, from what I've gathered it's the LP model (no holes on headband, pale yellow radiators).
The info about the K240-M and K141 is really what I was hoping for, I'm hoping I can find a K141 in bad condition and transplant the drivers.

With a bit of luck a compatible pair might appear in the trade forum.

I finished refurbing my silver-cup k141 and it does appear to have more bass than my gold-cup version. Both 600 ohm.

If i recall correctly, in the sextett the driver is sort of inside a cylindrical cartridge that includes the grille, where in the k141 is is just snapped into the baffle.

Be careful soldering. Don't dwell longer than you have to on the tabs.

If that's the only difference then it sounds pretty moddable.
For now I'm still on the lookout for drivers.

But those yellow rings look like they serve a purpose. Like Chip Chester posted could they be some sort of passive drivers? Or are they just there for cushioning?

SSL... Do you still need that driver? I have a pair of k240s with the same problem. I was going to buy a new pair. I figured I could just give you the good driver.

Hi, Jeffleg, I know it’s been awhile, but I am wondering if you still do have your broken sextets? I could use parts for my set if you want to get rid of them.
