Aligning Cartage with Overhang gauge, Getting High end distortion

I have been through all that.
In the end (after much research and hours reading various forums) I bought a Mo Fi Geo Disc.
Should have done that years ago.
I am not going to go through the details but look it up and see what you think.
how do you line it up to the pivot point? on a technics SL for example it isn't easy to see. seems like without a pinpoint alignment to the tonearm pivot it would introduce error, no?

It use same overhang gauge but if you see basic dimensions and geometry calculations it cant to use same overhang gauge to set overhang at 15mm. How it sounds is another question, maybe good, maybe bad. AT-LP120 have same tonearm dimensions as SL-1200 but different pivot to spindle distance, 215mm vs. 214.15mm. If overhang gauge can be used on AT-LP120 TT then overhang is 15.85mm not 15mm as on SL-1200 TT. Distorsion and tracking error over grooves is different as complete needle path and curve over grooves.

See post #35 above.

In any case, the OP seems to have a more basic problem, in that for some reason he is unable to mount his cartridge squarely in the headshell, and incapable of making the back/forth adjustments implicit in using a protractor. The easiest approach in his case will be to simply set the stylus to gasket/washer distance at 52mm, with the cartridge square in the headshell. But it appears that even this simpler approach is beyond his capabilities. I cannot imagine why the shop is able to mount the cartridge, but he is not.

But since this is apparently the case, it would seem that his only option is to take the headshell and cartridge to the shop, ask them to set it at 52mm, and then quit obsessing about it. It seems obvious that the sibilance problem he was having was a function of a crappy stylus, rather than one of alignment. Set it to the Technics-specified 52mm and be done.

Has the OP said where he lives? Perhaps another AK member could help him out by taking a look at his headshell and cartridge and trying to figure out why he is having such difficulty mounting the cartridge squarely and at the proper distance.

OP does not have problem with headshell and he cant to use any basic protractor on this TT. Simple reason... Inner null point is not based on standard null point for that tonearm. Standard tonearm have inner null points inside grooves between inner grove radius and outer groove radius. Stevenson method have inner groove point placed at point on inner groove radius and Baerwald have that point 4-5mm inside inner groove radius at grooves. SL-23 have that inner null point on death wax before 60.325mm IEC or 57.5mm DIN. SL-23 have inner null point placed at 53.639mm and this is mission impossible to using any standard protractor. On SL-23 TT if he want to set tonearm on manufacturer alignment with 14mm overhang, 22 degree offset angle and effective length on 220mm then OP must to use custom arc protractor or some overhang gauge with 51mm distance to achieve 14mm overhang. SL-1200 overhang gauge with 52mm is not adequate for SL-23 tonearm dimension as any standard protractor.
If you see on this table, pivot to spindle, effective length, overhang and offset angle is placed at point exactly where must to be placed as manufacturer say to be but inner null point is placed inside innner groove on dead wax.
Conrad Hoffman protractor generator tool also does not have precise ability to make this custom protractor because that him tool have calculations only for standard protractor calculations based on Lofgren and Stevenson methods. Best and most precise what OP can to do is to use Conrad Hoffman tool then enter Pivot to spindle distance at 206mm and enter inner groove distance at 53.639mm then print as Stevenson protractor. Difference between manufacturer alignment and this arc protractor is less then 0.2mm and cartridge is not exactly placed in straight position inside headshell but this is only what he can to do and to be very close on manufacturer alignment.

This is final results. Final arc protractor is attached as PDF file and it`s ready for print.

Sorry, but I disagree. It is quite clear that he is having significant difficulty simply mounting the cartridge, much less getting it precisely aligned.

You are right. Indeed if tonearm gasket have shorten distance from spindle then SL-1200 with only 1mm then overhang gauge may be used to achieve 14mm overhang on SL-23. Did you know that distance difference? SL-1900 have 46mm distance from tonearm gasket to spindle. I measured it right now on my SL-1900. I suppose that SL-1200 have same distance, I dont know, I dont have SL-1200?! As you say this is much less problem to precise align SL-23 then OP have with simple mount cartridge into headshell. Also OP have new needle with Vivid Line shape and this needle shape is pretty immune on IGD as Micro Line or Micro Ridge needle shapes etc.
For my point of view OP dont have simple problem to right mount cartridge inside headshell, it have one point alignment method on him TT. Him new VL stylus compensate that errors what he have but tracking errors stay as before under him new VL stylus. The Consequence is resolved but the cause is still present.

I will put another pic. My first was not a good one.
Place the disc on turntable (just like a record)
Rotate so the long ridge, A - B, is pointing to the pivot point of arm. ( I got a hint from this forum. Get a short piece of white cotton, fix one end, with a small speck of Blu Tack or something like that, exactly on the pivot point. Fix the other end to the B end of ridge. This allows you to sight from above the precise line of ridge.)
The with a small bit of tape secure the turntable from moving.
Now adjust cartridge so the stylus tip when gently lowered sits perfect on the dot in the marked grid on the right side.
When it does, look from above to adjust paralell in the marked grid.
This now is the part where patience is needed. In adjusting the paralell of cart it can move the stylus of the dot a fraction. Keep adjusting until everything lies up ie. the dot, the position in grid , stylus shaft with other grid E - D etc.

As previous poster suggested, do one screw first not to tight, until you are happy. Then hold cart firmly to tighten.
Anyway, this disc worked well for me, the other posters are more experienced than I.

Thanks everyone for the support, and I tried most of the suggestions but it just wont work, and I was trying to find a way to put it into words but This hit the nail on the head

That is my exact issue. No matter what I try it just shimmys out of the perfect position I have.... been working on it for hours...
Do you know what would be a good headshell to get? Or will I have the same issue in another one because the mount is the actual cartage?

I have a similar problem, different turntable.

Take a look on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-...518743207&sr=8-13&keywords=headshell+technics
But there’s no lack of other places on the web.

I bought a headshell that allowed more front to back movement of the cart. Problem solved.

Please may I ask to you that you measure null point distance on Geo-Disc from pivot point? I cant find anywhere on internet what is distance on that null point from spindle on Geo-Disc. I suppose there is somewhere from 119-121mm?!

Everyone continues to provide more information regarding stylus choices and protractor use. The OP has a much more fundamental problem....either he is unable to figure out how to get the cartridge mounted in the headshell where it needs to be, or that headshell does not accommodate that cartridge. He bought a nice stylus, and had a dramatic improvement from it. So, while it may not be as good as the original, it's probably ok.

OP, where are you? An AK member with more experience may be able to take a look at it for you. Alternatively, post better pictures of the headshell and cartridge from top, bottom , both sides, and head on. Ideally, it would be great if you could also take pics of its underside without the cartridge. Make sure you have enough lighting to allow good detail. The pics might help us figure out why you are having such difficulty with what should be a fairly easy task (that is, measuring 52mm and locking down the cartridge at that point, centered in the headshell (from side to side).
