Allen Organ 6L6 amp

They aren't called organ donors for nothing.

Funny!

rat fink:
Honestly, I can see the logic for the most part of restoring a pair of vintage speakers. Some anyway. Its a noble endeavour that can provide value packed results and is educational at the same time. However, the "homes" that most of these organ amplifiers resided in were tone cabinets and not the organ itself. I have nothing against tone cabinets, but they typically were not designed or intended for HIFI so restoration would be an exercise in futility. That is unless someone wanted to use it for an organ speaker obviously.

I don't have a clue as to what the Hammond amps were originally housed in but those Allens were in tone cabs. but pulled many years ago and stored as replacement amps. I guess it would be safe to say that if replacement amplifiers were in great enough demand, they would have been long gone before I was fortunate enough to locate them.

These amplifiers will live out the second stage of there life still producing music, but just not MI oriented.

I think that beats the heck out of their more than likely eventual fate, the scrap yard. The Allens for example, were about 2 months way from that fate I was told.

You audio abuser, you! :D

I took another look at my 75s last night, and aside from the slightly different numbering on the transformers, the resistor and cap selections are different as well. Looks like Allen made a lot of sourcing changes along the way.

Allen Organ 6L6GC Amplifier Model 2458

Can anyone post (or e-mail me) a schematic for the Allen Organ Model 2458 amplifier? It is a mono amplifier which uses a 5U4 rectifier, a 12AU7, 12AY7, and 2 6L6GC outputs. I'm getting a very loud hum, not the usual 60 cycle type, but a higher frequency hum. I have replaced a few of the power supply filter capacitors but that didn't do it. I want to study a schematic. Thanks for any help!

Off the top of my head, the tubes sound like it's an allen 20? Some of the earlier variants used different transformers. It might be worth contacting Allen, they still have the old schematics.

I'm guessing that 2458 is likely a date code (24th week of 1958) and that your amp is a model 20, since it has the exact tube configuration. Allen wasn't a company that liked a lot of variation. They had their tube model 20's, 40's, 75's and 90's. While they did use different suppliers for tubes, variations of tubes, and different suppliers for key components (like iron), they didn't vary much on what the retail customer saw.
