In the process of a cleanup of a 8080 and the only lights are for the power meters . None of the indicator's or panel/radio lamps dial will light up .
Have cleaned the function switch and it looks good from what I can tell .
Seem to remember something about the power board needing to be re soldered , but can't find the thread now....
Also something about beefing up the resistors also.
No schematic or SM yet so I'm going in a little blind so if anyone has some ideas . Sure acts like a ground is off somewhere ..

Thanks

Have you checked to see if there's power to the bad lamps? Maybe it's just bad bulbs. Also, I've seen several references to resoldering the Dolby board. Apparently several circuits cross that board. Hunt for posts by LBPete.

On the 9090s, there's a 3A fuse on the power board for the lighting. I think there should be one on the 8080 as well.

It will be the closest fuse to you if you are looking from the front.

Bypass?

If this isn't a db model there's a bypass procedure, I think it will work on an 8080, I have done it on a couple 9090's.
It puts the lights on all the time, not just when FM is selected.

Thanks for the info so far, bulbs are fine , just no power to them .
The unit just has 8080 on it and on the far right the switch has a dolby with tape .
No seperate section just for dolby , No ribbon cable or flex .
So the panel lamps only work when the radio is selected ? Did not know this so it's good to find out.
None of the function lamps will light up also , and with out any experance with these models and no schematic or SM I'm sorta lost . Checked the power fuses and Panel fuse lamps first off. Cleaned the switch and started to trace the path (Guessing ) but my power in the area went off so had to stop . (Too many xmas lights maybe?)
In the middle of testing then dark !
Wow!!! was that a scare when it happen....
Planning to look it over later , just wanting to see if someone could help with a plan of attack.....

Thanks ,
1/2 way there !

Mod did fix the back lights and the pointer lamps , but.....
Still no indicator lights or FM stereo lamp at all .

AC volt readings off lamp board are

yellow yellow yellow red
5.37v 0.06 0.06 0.06

green black black
0.06 ................
blue orange yellow green brown red
0.06 ................................... 5.37v
black
....
Color blind somewhat so best guess at wire colors.

So my thought's are that I need to trace the path somemore...
Have cleaned the switch but will give it another shot next time..

Also what is the switch for on the FM board for ?

I worked on a 9090 that had those issues. The selector switch was the problem.
I think i had to fuss with it a bit. Cleaning helped though.

Rob is right here, that selector switch is infamous for failure after so many years of use, more deoxit is called for, and yes, it can take some work, did you go stop to stop 100 cycles?
Did you get a nylon bristle pipe cleaner and work it in along the wafers?
I had a 990 {9090 in black} that I would soak and cycle for about 2 weeks, daily flushing and maybe 20 cycles stop to stop, before finally the crud came loose and the receiver now plays beautifully in my den!
Check those fuses with a meter, you can't always see that they are cooked.

Thanks for the tips ,
The re-wire mod helped in getting the pointer and panel lamps to go , plus I was not aware that they only worked with the Radio selected .
Because it is new to me I ,

Pulled all the fuses and checked them for value correctness and their condition before powering up , then again for any bad ones after the lamps were found to be out . All are good unless there are others not on the main fuse board I'm not aware of .
Also pulled one side of each lamp and checked them , and all were OK .
Reflowed the solder on the switch's and now the FM Stereo will light up !
Any fused resistors I should check ? No SM as of yet ...

Have sprayed down the two selector switches a few times but still no power, do you think removing it from the board to clean would be the best thing to do .
The pipe cleaners trick not tried yet , will do this later and report back....

The unit sounds great just very dirty , and "heavy".
When it's time to move around the term Built like a Tank come to mind .

Thanks for all the help so far.

The main clean-up is the saw dust and cigarettes tar and smell !!!!!!

The original owner remodeled and left it uncovered , luckly only saw dust inside and some paint on cord . But lots of tar and smells of smoke...

Ok, sounds like you are on the right track, keep us posted.
Get the manual, you will need it anyway.

The sawdust is easy enough to remove..

I've had a few receivers that smelled like cigarets. I remove the case and blow everything out with compressed air, and then I point a squirrel cage blower right on the thing for a day or so.

Tell us how it does

Once the sawdust was removed the smell seemed to be less , plus it will air out now that it is all apart .
The small items , knobs and caps will go into the ultrasonic bath cleaner . the front panel will need alot of attention too .
Haven't taken off the cover over the tuning cap yet but it seems that the shielding / top cover helped protect it .
The fux wood vinyl is in poor shape , haven't decided what I'm going to do there yet .
