I was in the local record shop and chatting with one of the owners. We got to talking about hunting for records and gear and he pointed to this Marantz 4240. He said if I wanted something to tinker with, I was welcome to it. He ultimately sold it to me for $20. It's pretty rough. Headphone output works, but is a bit quieter than I'd expect based on volume knob position. Speaker output is totally non existent.
I found a couple of fuses blown in the output amp sections, but I'm also seeing at least 1 burned resistor and 1 capacitor that looks melted. The Dolby split shaft selector is also broken. That's just from glancing around, no boards have been pulled yet. I have no doubt that there are more problems. If I ever wanted to run this in my house, it would need a full recap at the very least.
Is this worth the effort, or should I just sell off the knobs, face and plastic bits? More specifically, is the $150 bux or more for caps, knob, resistors, transistors, etc. and a dozen hours I can expect to sink into this a reasonable investment? It would be fun to work on, but I'm not hurting for projects right now.
