I just acquired a pair of 604C's, images enclosed. Looks like one was re-foamed, overall in good shape, original crossovers included. I own a pair of Model 14's and thought I'd try these out, got a great local deal. I'd appreciate any help with suggested next steps, I don't have any experience with these. I'm thinking about Stonehenge cabinets. I've see someone post a pic with a attenuator that adjusted -2db to +2b. image enclosed, should I add this? All other images are mine. All feedback is appreciated!

When you say re-foamed, are you meaning new cloth edge surrounds ?
If you can take some pictures from the rear
To see the part #’s stamps of the cones so
The experts can see what they have.
The 604c’s are rear or inside mount only.
So a Stonehenge type cabinet will need a rear
Access panel to install them .
I would also add the Stonehenge model used 604g’s that
Had more compliant larger cloth surrounds
For better/ deeper Bass response .

On the first 604 you show it looks to have some surround cracking. I think maybe someone coated it to try to stop the cracking. From the pic it looks like it’s missing a chunk of surround at the 12 o clock position.
These have the paper hinge surrounds correct?
I’m not sure what the long term fix is for the cracking paper surrounds other than to recone them. Maybe someone with some skills could install cloth surrounds on them? GPA or GordonW?

Stumbling across a good deal on 604s is every Altec lover's dream, buddy. You done good.
I've never owned a pair of 604s, so I'll be of zero use to you. However, there are a number of very knowledgeable 604 guys here who can give you a lot of info on the cabinets you should construct. Don't neglect the Facebook Altec pages, either - though you will need to be VERY selective about whom you take advice from. There's a large hive of wannabe "advisors" there.

Thanks, yes the cloth, I’m use to seeing foam. I have a local person who can take care of this for me. I have also read about the cabinets, I’m still looking at best options for looks and performance. I wasn’t sure if there were upgrades I should do or similar maintenance type things I should do before I play them? Thanks!

Your cones are one piece with a paper hinge.
There is no separate surround, it's all molded in one piece and you must replace the whole thing.
Proper original style cones are out there, you just have to find them.
Somebody made some decent repro cones, they come up on ebay now and then. i might have heard a rumor a while ago that GPA had a supply of early style paper hinge cones, might be worth a call to them to find out.

There's no flat or ledge to glue a surround to. It needs to be replaced with a proper new cone.
Actually, if they're reconed with new style, glue-in cones, they will front mount since the clamping screws and rim can be omitted. These are early split rim baskets, there are no angular gussets on the back of the rim, just the screw heads from the clamping screws.

That's not really a suggestion i can make for you.
You sort of have to decide what your goal with them is.
For the time being, if they're not buzzing or rubbing, and are otherwise working, i'd be inclined to simply repair them with the tacky glue and coffee filter method.
Once the originals are worn/aged beyond practical use, there is really no wrong way to proceed.
Do what will best serve you for the length of time you intend to own them
That sounds like a good plan and my goal will depend on how they sound. If I really like the way the sound, I'd want to keep them original, if not then new style and sell. I bought a pair of model 14's from a guy who had the 604E's and I really liked his, so I thought I jump on these when they became available. I'm a bit anxious to hear them, hoping I made the right choice.
