Altec 704 receiver

Hey everybody, I have this Altec model 704 receiver. I can't find much info on it. I think it is something like 30WPC. A fairly basic unit.
Anyway, I have a friend who wants to buy this/trade something for it. I don't think it has any real significnt value(+$200 or more) but was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I am thinking something like $50 cash. It is in cosmetically very nice condition and functionally perfect.

My buddy, also has the Altec model 714. He wants mine as he is going to try and start a collection of them.

Any thoughts.

I'm sure someone else will weigh in here...but in my opinion, $50 is giving it away. Those Altec receivers can't be common.

$50 on one to a friend regardless of its 'value' seems like a fair deal to me. It all comes out in the wash over time when you are horsetrading back & forth with friends I've found. Even when truly high dollar stuff comes into play. The Altec receivers are rare but that does not necessarily meant good. It could also mean discontinued early on by Altec to minimize reputation damage.

I can only give you a hearsay story but an older acquaintance I knew had an Altec receiver at one point along his audio sojourn. He bought it instead of a Marantz based on the salesman's glowing review about it. It never tuned stations very well and had to go back for other repairs a couple times while he had it. Eventually he went back to the same store to trade it in and discovered they dropped carrying Altec receivers. He apparently wasn't the only customer that had issues with his. I don't know if it was confined to one model or across all of them.

If there's a good reason to grab these things, your friend is squarely on track with it.

Beyond that, Soundmotor's post covers the bases nicely.
 
soundmotor, I think your right. It's not like the $'s are going to make a difference of food on the table or even a car payment. But, goodwill is invaluable.

The unit itself, is in my opinion, a very good solid unit. Very basic, but solid. My buddy has several nice TT in various states of disrepair. Maybe a trade on one of those.

Maybe at the supebowl during half time and after a couple of beers we can do a deal.

In my experience there is no question that it all comes back to you. I have two friends near me and we've passed so much gear back & forth to each other that we no longer bother to keep track over who owes who what. You just sort of know when you are light on a deal and make it up; they do the same. It is all part of being friends, you don't ever have to worry about the money part of it.
