Altec 811 vs 511 with 806 8a driver

Currently running 811b horns with 806 drivers & they sound great but I constantly think about the 511s.
Why do I lust for them-the bigger is better syndrome? I dunno.
I cross the 811s at 1200hz & they sit on top of Kustom mid/bass horn cabs loaded with JBL G-135 15" woofers.
Room is 16 x 24 so pretty near listening.
Would the 806s be able to go as low as say 800hz on the 511s?
Is the room too small for bigger horns?
Will I even hear much of a difference vs cost?
Should I stay or should I go now?:D

That's not an optimal match. You would be better off with an 802 or 802-8g at 800hz on a 511.

Thanks hat-looked at the spec sheet on the 806 &they claim 500-20k but I know they roll off much lower than 20k so wasnt sure how low they will really play.

The advantage of the 802 over the 806 is top end extension and sensitivity and IME both work equally well with a 500hz crossover on a 511 horn. Given that they work well at 500hz then 800 is no sweat; after all Altec used 806s on 811s in many of their products.

To me the 500hz crossover gives a little more presence and clarity but it's no big deal. If you're curious about the 511s I suggest getting a pair and deciding what you think, only you know what you'll like. Many hornys like to experiment.

Thanks Tom-sounds like a itch I will have to scratch someday!
No funds for funs at the moment-just thinking ahead but shouldnt be as the rig sounds the best it ever has.
