There's a local CL ad for a pair of Altec 9849-8B monitors. They have the bent aluminum horn with an 806 compression driver, 12" 414-8C woofers and 32343 crossover. Don't see many vintage monitors in this neck of the woods. At $650, are they worth a look? Any good for home use as opposed to PA?

Thanks!

They were never a PA speaker, they're a studio monitor designed for high soffit or ceiling mounting.

I own and love a pair of 9849-8D(finished oak cabinets). I gave 600 for them some time ago, and if i were to ever consider selling them i'd not let them go for a penny less.

That said, i think 650 is nearing the top for painted versions, they need to be perfect or negotiated. But, the value is there in raw components alone. The 414-8C uses the same cast return pot in it's motor as the 416-8B, and the 23746 driver uses the 23744 "light" diaphragm, and cast pot construction rather than the welded pipe and plate that all other 806 variants use. A limited number of late 23746's also have tangerine phase plugs. It should not be compared to or represented as an 806 as the only thing it has in common with other 806's is the weight of the alnico slug.

They are an excellent speaker with the simple caveat that they don't extend as low as the 15 inch systems can, and they're a few db less sensitive.

That's a quality hifi woofer. I'm not really up on Altec values, but you can check the prices of each component on ebay, and I'm betting they add up to over that amount. It seems safe to assume to crossovers could use some work, but I'd sure give them a listen if you're interested.

Maybe a recapping, it's a fine network with eq and zobel built in, fairly compact and not the easiest to work on. But, it's a better sounding plug n play network for a 604-8G than a stock 604-8G network.

Check the Altec board, some recent threads about 9849 and it's network, i'll post some inductor values for the 32343 eventually.

I am very interested in at least checking them out. I don't quite have the toy funds for them unless I want to be in the dog house for awhile.:scratch2: I have it nicely decorated.:D

I honestly think that 650 price should have plenty of room for negotiation. I think something in the 400-500 range would offer the best balance of "reasonable" for buyer and seller.

Just my .02...............
