Altec A7 VOTT I think I got a pair

Mark - I don't know anywhere near as much as Bowtie, and he will readily admit there are plenty of folks on the Altec forums that know way more than him.

I'd go there for the last word....:thmbsp:

We could build a Steve Bench crossover and use the DB-20s I'm building for you on top and then build something around those Antek torroids for the 80hz-800hz duty (or wherever you set the crossover points). Maybe a modest 100 watt/channel amp based around Pete's red board.

too cool for sure. Heck, I might even have them running by the time Jays twangfest is up - don't think I would haul these monsters cross country though, but maybe.

Mark,

Your welcome to borrow my Pioneer SF850 crossover for testing. Bear in mind that each set of drivers requires its own amp.

George

okay folks, I am getting really close to starting hte refinishing on these.
DC270 was kind enought to build me a set of x19 xovers for the units. I have aset of 921a drivers for the bass, some jbl2325(that right?) compression drivers, and 811 horns.

I have a line on a set of JBL2225H drivers for a pretty reasonable cost. Which do you folks think would be better in the cabinet, the jbl or altecs. Or would there even be a difference.

ANyway, I'll start taking pics in a few days and keep this updated as I go.

Hate to say this Mr. Cricket guy.. but you're going to be missing the real magic of what Altecs are all about if you're using JBL drivers and not Altec.

that is why I asked!:thmbsp:
+1 to keep the altecs.

Thanks!

I'm especially talking about the compression driver.. if you could find a pair of 416-8a or 8b woofers you'd really be doing good too...

Myself, I never heard a reliable difference between 1" aluminum Altec and JBL compression drivers when used on Altec 511 horns. I think the Altec magic is mainly in the woofers; the 414s, 416s, 515s and 406s.

Hey Cricket, I'm late to this thread . Really cool setup you are working on.Can't wait to see pics of the results. JR:music::music::music:

I agree with Mr. Brennan.

However, i think Jcricket is referring to ferrite JBL2425's which use a titanium phragm and are a good bit ragged sounding compared to the older aluminum and alnico JBL drivers, takes a little x-over tweaking to tame them.

Now, if he's referring to the 2425 clones that he bought from me a while back, i am not sure of the diaphragm material or the sound as they remained new in their boxes while i had them. I had bought them for a friend's project that never materialized.

Hey Tom,
Yep they are actually the clones I got from you. I have tested those on a few different spekaer projects. I think they sound very good. But, then again, I have never really been swept away with the titanium stuff I have heard.

Tom, do you have an opinion on the jbl woofer driver vs the altec woofer driver for my A7 clones? I was hoping to specifically get your feedback.

TIA,
MArk

Mark, if i understand correctly you already have a good working pair of 921's? Use those for starters. It's probably best not to throw a lot of $ at them until you determine if you like the midrange forward, high impact presentation of the VOT.

The 921's are the modern successor of the 421, they'll give you a fair taste of the kind of mids that are possible with a 416 or 515. 416's will give you the best overall system balance if you go subless.

That said, i run JBL 2035's in my VOT's. My choice was based on their nearly ruler flat impedance curve, and midrange presentation that was as close to the 515B of any driver i had to that point tried in my VOT's, and at 20% of the price. I've heard 2225's in VOT's used for a rock band's PA, they're killer in that capacity. No reason i can think of that they couldn't be made to play reasonably well for home use.

At the time the flat impedance curve was a big deal to me as i thought for sure tube amplification and a passive dividing networks were my future/fate. A lot has changed since then. But, the JBL's work so well/sound so good in them in a subwoofer augmented system that they remain.
