Any good? Magical? Sound like an old speaker, meh? Any thoughts, I had a pair of 416Z ( I think ) way back in the day, what was I thinking???, anyway have kept an eye out for anything Altec old school ( or Sparkomatic like 301 ), there is a set of these on the radar for $350 in cabinets, grab em or pass? Any thoughts mucho appreciated.

NOT a bargain but you do get a bit of Alnico Altec Magic.
they do need some better tweeters.
Bass is not their strong point. not as good as the 416Z's that's for sure.

Thanks. These would be the speaker stands for my mains mostly, but a throwback for a classical afternoon. Do they get down to 50? That would be plenty.

If your looking for subs, Not even my 3rd choice . More of a mid Bass speaker.
there's a chance they could just add some volume.

Do they get down to 50? Lots of posts about recone and cabinets and regauss but not much on sound. I live in a trailer trash trailer park, too much bass and it tips off the dirtbags. I think I'm the bald guy in the Cheech and Chong movie....Thanks. PS really weak bass means a trip to Great Plains for reguassing, I think I will need to price that, plus 50 lbs shipping.....

If you wan't Paul Klipsch's favorite thing to hate about loud speakers you buy Altec Biflex speakers where the woofer cone modulates the mid range and high frequencies. He called it FM distortion. Frequency Modulation distortion which gives hard edges to the mid range and highs. Plus you have many different points of origin for different frequencies causing sever timing error in the presentation. Some people can hear that others can't. But we can all hear FM distortion. Remember the small cone has to carry the LF notes to make the outer woofer ring move. Compromise after compromise after compromise!!!!!!!!

A speaker nut's endless debate, audio's Brady vs Manning, " distortion ( would be corruption be a better word?) of the signal " by a crossover vs Doppler distortion from a cone moving a long way for bass while still moving at high frequency. Personally, it's single driver coherency for me. But just try and find an affordable full range that is listenable ( PS 40-1354a Taiwan production an utterly viceless driver if you seen em grab em ). As far as what the drivers are. no idea seller has not taken anything apart and I sure as heck don't want them to, and they are 5 hours away...
