Altec cabs EV drivers

macaltec

Metal Master
Got these speakers from a fellow AKer. Just got them going 100% this evening. They are an Altec 614D cabinet with EV PRO-12B co-axial drivers. Some may have seen my other thread asking about porting them. Gonna seal em up, but they sound pretty nice as is. I'd like some more bottom end, but then who wouldn't?

Im a sucker for Full Range and Triaxial EV driver's mac, I read your other thread and that subject is still somewhat of a mystery to me also. I guess you could easily block the port and if you dont like the results remove the block. A liitle experimentation goes a long way so let your ear be the judge.

Nice EV though and I agree, more bottom end is always a good thing. :D

Very nice indeed. From my experimenting with Santana II cabinets and my National drivers, vent size can make a huge difference. I was able to get some very good bass out of my Nationals, but I have a very small room to fill. With these type of drivers it always seems to come down to cabinet size first.

I'm with RC on the coaxial/tiaxial thing, love the sound of them. He of course turned me on to that sound. Now I have quite the growing collection of oddball triaxials going.

My suggestion, seal them up and use a sub and you will be set. I'm sure they will sound great.

What type of power amp are you using?

Right now I'm running them with 2 bridged mono H/K Citation 19 amps and a Carver preamp. They are a bit of overkill for power. I'm gonna try the tubes this evening.

Is it me or are those over-stuffed with insulation?? :scratch2:

Not sure. It is quite visible through the port though. How much, as a rule of thumb, should be in there? Didn't seem excessive to me whem I had the driver out.

Most ported / vented speakers i have seen only have a thin layer on the walls of the cabs to reduce reflections.

Kfa888 nailed this one. When I was researching my project that seemed to be what I was told by anyone that I asked and I think many of them knew what they were talking about.

I think they will sound even better with tubes and a little break in if the drivers have not been used in a while.

OK, so we know what is needed for insulation on a ported box. I am going to close the port up as the driver is better suited for it. So how should the insulation be for a sealed enclosure. I know most that I have seen have quite a bit of insulation in them.

Hey Mac these guy's have nailed it, most ported or vented have a thin layer of
stuffing along the back, sides, top and bottom with nothing on the front.

Generally a sealed cabinet is stuffed pretty solid but don't go overkill and jam it
in there. Just fill it pretty good.

DGWOJO I was going to see what you may have for drivers (On the cheaper side) to
make a pair of efficient fullrange/coax speakers to go with a 300B amp, like 100DB or
higher if you had something we could work out the lagistics on that would be really cool.

I'm running some utah 8" wizzer cone jobbies that sound really good but I'm looking
for some 10" or bigger and more efficient. Just curious in your vast collection if yu
just might have something to fit the bill.

I'm getting hooked on the sound of speaker systems like these too!

Kegger,
Your welcome to borrow my Wolverine LT-12's, I have the cabinets and drivers just lack the time to assemble them, I wanted Grumpy's Aristocrat cabs but timing didn't work out, let me know if you want to try them, the infamous TW-35 tweeter is integrated in these, Dave.

Woj that would be cool, we'll have to get together, I'd like to come by your place
anyway and see your stuff. Thanks!

Sorry for the mini Hijack guy's!

No problem. I like that these threads get people talking and that generates ideas which leads to trades, sales and so on which pisses wives off and audio equipment on this scale is looked down upon by them and then the guys are made to sell their gear and replace it with a Bose system and we all get to buy more gear and....................refer back to the beginning of this long run on sentence. Can I Hi-Jack my own thread?

Kegger,
After tax season I'm finishing a basement paneling project, having a new door wall installed, and adding a pad and carpeting to the listeining area, it will be great to have you stop by after that!! Dave.
