Hey guys , I have a pair of 605A duplex speakers and they sound excellent with the open baffle set up ! Should I go this route and buy a nice subwoofer ? If so which size / brand etc ? If not should I make some nice 620 cabinets ? Let me know what you Altec experts think !! Or an eminence 12/15” in a box ?? Thanks !

I’ve never heard Altec duplexe’s in an open baffle arrangement, but I do have some 604’s in 620b cabinets with sub’s in a side system that put me in audio nirvana.

The 416 based 605 LF doesn't require as much box as the 604 to reach the same LF extension. You can get good results from a smaller cabinet.
Thanks bowtie427 !! Another question for you pls… I have a chance to buy mint pair of Altec carmels dual 414 with the horn Or stick with the 605a ????

If you have the room, and it won't keep you from paying bills or putting food on the table, never choose between Altecs. Don't get the Carmels instead of 605's, get them in addition to them.

Seriously, they won't ever be made again, and Carmels are firmly seated among the top shelf residents in the Altec lineup.

The way the tandem 414's of the Carmels(and 9844 monitors) are oriented present a polar pattern that mirrors that of the 811 horn in the crossover region. The robust motors and light moving assemblies also offer impressive dynamic attack as tandem pairs.

Thanks for the great response bowtie !! Part of me is worried that they might be hard to sell in the future etc.. and in the back of my head I feel it might be safer to just grab a pair of JBL 112 or something in that range vs the big lowboy Carmels. Plus the bass response is a factor here. I know I will have more tighter bass with the JBLs ? I will be using a pair of Mc30s with a audio research sp3-A1 preamp which is a great combo IMO Looking forward to hearing back, Let me know your thoughts Thanks
