Altec Flamenco 848a with two door console

Hey all,

I'm am only able to find one other sold eBay listing for $990 for just the speakers. The two door console has a Fischer receiver and unmarked turntable included. Everything works, and they're cosmetically B/B+. Just need a minor refinish.

So, what do you guys think these are worth? I've seen their sister speakers, the Valencias, sell as high as $1500 and those are plywood (the flamencos are almost entirely real wood) and don't have the SUPER CLASSY Spanish grates :)

I missed out on a pair of Flamencos for $25 not knowing their true value at the time.
Not getting them for cheap bothered me more than not getting them.
 
Receiver looks like a 700T

If the Flamenco grills are perfect, they're worth some additional consideration on the value as is the console.

The grills are perfect, which is shocking. Not sure how they made it 50 years without anybody breaking them!

Wow, I hadn't really paid any attention to the receiver! Didn't realize it was such a beast, but figures you'd need a lot of power to drive these things.
 
Okay, the amp is a Fisher 700T (good eye!)

The turntable is a Dual 1019, it appears to work, but I have no vinyl to test.

Going to open up the Flamencos soon to verify components and do some light cleaning and snap some photos. There are about twenty screws on the back securing them.

Upon closer inspection it is an absolute miracle how good a shape these are in. Not a single noticeable chip in the wood or the grills. The finish isn't that bad, just dull. Somebody did put some drinks on top of the speakers over the years, but nothing major.
 
It's kind of an oddball for Altecs to go above $1,000 imo

I have owned several pairs --- it takes months to move them. Ask around the forums, most members have about $700 into their pairs. I eventually sold all my Altecs for between $600-$800. Valencia & Heathkit AS-101, Santiago, VOTT
 
I sold my Flamenco for 800 last year. But would have kept it if I had the console. The console is very rare and looks extremely good with Flamenco after refurbish.

The matching cabinets are rather rare, especially in nice shape, but the market is thin, especially if you aren't on the West Coast (or in Asia). Like many of the similar period JBL home setups, it is often the case that the drivers (and in your case, components) actually sell for more than the complete package, simply due to shipping costs. The components are portable where the furniture isn't.

Gven the wonderful condition, your best alternative is likely to restore everything and take a long term approach. Either keep everything if it meets your musical needs, or, as noted above, plan on a long term sale period. If not, you'll likely have to take less to keep everything together.
 
sound as good as the Valencia. I paid far more than $800 fro mine, but they are not leaving the house for sure.
Many Shindo/Leben etc users love the Valencia / Flamenco - the A version (16ohm)
 
I would guess market would be $1200 - $1500. You surely would get more selling individually (but that would be a crime).
 
Soundsalike went from altecs to carver amazings to kappa 7's to cantons to Jbl 4412. He is happy with 4412 but I'm happy with his kappa 7's. I think he doesn't have much experience with the higher end Altec marketplace. I.e multicellular horns or 288 drivers. Hollywood 515 or duplexes. My h808 horns alone are good for 2,500.
 
Do you folks think it's worth refinishing them? Or should I just let the next person pick their color? Value wise, what's better?
 
I agree completely with pl50. The collector market gets weird when prices hit 4 digits (or higher). The next buyer might decide to refinish them to match a decor or a mood. But an old-school collector might demand original finishes, even if they have deteriorated. If you do ANYTHING other than clean them up you risk alienating half or more of your perspective buyers.
 
Thanks for the tip on the wax and feed! This stuff is incredible!!! This pic shows the top which has been treated versus the sides which had not. Although my garage now smells like honey farts...
