Altec Flamenco system score....

Phototone

Super Member
I just acquired an Altec Flamenco speaker system with center equipment cabinet. Very nice furniture, and surprising that the cabinets have factory Altec 605b speakers and dividing networks, rather than separate horn tweeter and woofer. I wonder what the schematic of the crossover is? I can't see capacitors because of the potting tar. It sounds good, as is, though.:music:

Very nice, another Valencia based system with a coax speaker, I wonder if Altec made them that way?? :scratch2:

Just noticed the baffle in your picture, it looks totally factory, amazing!!

Nice. I used to use 605As; they could float a huge image that wrapped right around you. AND excellent dynamics to boot.

What's the difference between the 604 and 605?

The 605 has slightly smaller magnets and can go lower in the bass range. Otherwise they are the same size speaker. I can tell you they are giving me very good bass in these Flamenco Bass Reflex enclosures.

no dust? Were they in a vacuum chamber?

WOW!! they look new!

Turborusty

It is apparent that they were lovingly cared for in someones home, there are no nicks or gouges around the base of the cabinets although there are a couple of minor stains on top of the speaker cabinets, probably from leaky flower pots.
The lattice grillwork does have some dust, which I will remove with a soft brush on a vacuum cleaner. The equipment cabinet doesn't appear to ever have had equipment mounted in it.

Notice in my photos in the original post, the label on the crossover (dividing network) says for 8 or 16 ohm. I found online a PDF of the Altec catalog page for the 605 speaker, and it gives the impedence of the speaker "system" as 16 ohm, which is how I have it connected to my tube amp. In a transformer-type output stage from tubes, what might sound different if connected to the 8 ohm taps?

Yes. You'll have a higher damping factor, which could change the sound in many different ways, at the cost of slightly less absolute power. Those changes to the sound may be better or worse...but as an easy, free tweak it's definitely worth trying.

The price you paid is a fair price. The lattice work will come out if you bend it slightly by grabbing the left and right edges, bending inward while pulling gently outwards. Wash em and stick em back in. I have a set like yours but the console is only two cabinets wide. Nice score. BTW mine have the 416z and 806-16s in them. Someday a 604/605 might come my way. Now if I could just find a pair of the La Paz end tables with the 601s! I have seen a set, three cabs wide, by another gentleman on here.
