Altec/GPA 604-8H II This seems like a really good deal to me ....

No shipping, I assume you would be able to pick them up yourself or have someone get them for you?
 
That is a good deal. It would bug me that one of the drivers is turned slightly in the cabinet (making the horn tilt), but I could get over that for the price. And you might be able to rotate it a little and fix it.
 
That's a little more than they sold for new a few years ago. When GPA introduced the series III with an improved horn, they nearly doubled the price.

Of course, they were sold new with crossovers, and there's no mention or pics of a crossover anywhere.

If you can't build cabinets, and don't mind your 604's shoehorned into a cabinet that was never optimized for them, and have no reference point for what they should sound like then they might be a deal.

Am I missing something. Where the earlier version of the GPA 604-8H II not as good as version III.

The company(or control thereof) has changed hands. The focus has shifted from supporting heritage Altec products to profiteering. Prices have been jacked significantly, in most cases new prices for drivers have nearly doubled.

^I was wondering what happened with them. Even diaphragms prices went way up.

In pic 12/12 of the eBay listing, the wiring is going to what looks like crossovers on the side of the cabs. But if I were buying these I would verify with the seller about that first

Hi Bowtie, you mentioned these cabinets weren't optimal for these drivers. They appear to be a version of a Stonehenge V which I've heard is a pretty good fit for the 604s. I don't have any first hand experience with these cabinets. If you don't mind, what would be an optimal cabinet?

To play most smoothly across the bottom of it's BW, modern 604(post 604B) wants a wide baffle, or it needs a network with some baffle step compensation.

It's a shame to do that in a speaker system where the driver was painstakingly engineered to require little more than basic filters in it's network.

I do understand space constraints and WAF, and for some folks the reduced footprint of the SH cabinet will be the difference that allows them in their space.

Remember, i'm not saying the SHV is a bad choice or that it won't work, it's just not the most optimal cabinet for a 604. Neither, is a 612. But, you'll find no shortage of happy campers running 604's in 612 cabinets.

I have several hundreds of hours experience with more than one system using 604-8G in 620 cabinets, it's a very familiar point of reference for me.

The 620 is really the optimal basis for a cabinet where LF is concerned. But, it has a wide footprint, and is an extremely conventional looking big box. That can be a deal breaker for some. The 620 also mounts the driver a bit low for some listener's seated position.
