Altec horns,drivers,and woofer values

Hello all, I have been researching the value of some of these Altec horns, drivers and woofers without much success. Could you please advise on the following horns 311-90 with 288g drivers and also the original crossover, sorry I do not have that number currently. Altec 1003b horns with no drivers and finally 2 Altec 418 Woofers and also opinion on the sounds of this woofer. I have not heard any of the Altec gear and I would like to. Depending on what I learn from all of your wisdom I may do some trading for these and possibly a singular Altec cabinet. I am really wanting to build some voice of the theater cabinets or if I get lucky possibly buy some. There are plans all over the internet in how to build these, some parts of the build look easy enough and others not so much, depending on what version of cabinet I decide on. Thank you for your help and opinions on the value and sound of these Altec pieces.

Free of cracks, chips or breaks, with proper working Altec diaphragms in the drivers, 1500-1800/pr all day long.

Altec 1003b horns with no drivers
with proper throats, no serious dents, no cracked or torn solder joints 500-750/pr, these are less common. an informed buyer will be aware of the advantages and desirability over the more common 1005 horn, and be willing to pay a premium for it.

2 Altec 418 Woofers and also opinion on the sound
Musical instrument/sound reinforcement speaker, forward and extended midrange, similar to a 421, found in quite a few early 1970's OEM instrument/PA applications. 150-250/pr, clean with no dents in the domes gets the premium.

Bowtie is spot on with what he said.

Personally I would use those 311 horns and 288 drivers for my own rig.

If you are going to sell them I would separate the drivers/horns. To the right buyer (think international buyers) they would be worth more as separate pairs.
Check out ebay completed sales for 288G drivers and 311-90 horns.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do with them. Those 288G are the last of the large format AlNiCo drivers. Some would argue the best. They would sound pretty damn good with some 515 woofers and maybe a super tweeter

Yea, those 311-90 horns and 288 drivers would make a sweet start to a horn based system. If you never heard anything like this than give them a chance. Those horns will play LOUD with only a few watts. They would pair well with a tubed SE amp.

Thank you all for your help, I have a guy that is willing to trade the above plus two JBL cabinets , kind of strange but both cabinets identical and have two 15 inch woofers in each cabinet, one of the cabinets has 2 2226j 16 ohm woofers and the other cabinet has 2035hpl 8 ohm woofers in them. One has a crossover the other does not. All of this to be traded for the MC2500 I have on BT, I am thinking this is a pretty good trade as I would really like to find or build a set of A5 or A7 voice of the theater cabinets, although it would be much easier to do the A6 style cabinet. Have never built any speakers but there are lots of plans on the net and my neighbor is an incredible carpenter. Building exact replicas most parts are available either used or new via Great Plains. Any thoughts about this idea or am I spinning my wheels going nowhere. I realize I don't have all the correct drivers but some can be found or possibly improvise with what I have and purchase what I don't.

I would make that trade. You could have a killer setup with the JBL cabs and a pair of the Altec horns.
I would make or modify those cabs to use one pair of the JBL woofers.

Are the horn diaphragms in the 288's 8 or 16 ohm? Orginal Altec or aftermarket?

Eventually you could find some 828 cabs. I bought mine empty for 200 bucks. One person I know uses JBL 2035's in his 828 cabs:rolleyes:

I built these. Woofers are JBL 2035H plain label.

I am pretty sure that one of these cabinets is homemade as I have not seen any VOTT cabinets with vertically mounted woofers. Here is that picture

And this cabinet is the other cabinet I was referring to, I have seen this one before but can not find the model number on it.

I would have to give up a set of JBL woofers in order to get both of these cabinets, the first cabinet I am not so sure about. On the other hand if it will be a guide to building the cabinets it may be worth it. Don't see these cabinets come up for sale in my area very often, not against building some cabinets. Does anyone have a good site that has true legitimate Altec VOTT dimensions? I have found several sets of plans but just skimmed over them, would prefer to have true Altec plans

Thank you, just what I was looking for. It looks like Altec made several changes in the drivers over the years, still researching if they made cabinet improvements as well. There is a lot of really good information on the Lansing heritage site! Thanks again
