@bowtie427ss you are correct. I meant 803B. As far as re cone thoughts. I did lots of google image searches on 803B red surrounds and found plenty of pairs. So I believe Altec used a run of red surrounds. As crazy as that sounds. I was first aware of them in 2012 when I started looking for spare drivers for my Altec 820's. I will try some other search engines later tonight. Rick

I cannot say with complete certainty, but i suspect the red surrounds are the result of a supply issue. Perhaps the vendor had produced an over-supply for another customer, and they just happen to be dimensionally the same. Or, perhaps the vendor could only source that particular color in time to fill Altec's order. We may never get a definitive answer since most who were there are no longer with us.
The same red surrounds can be found on 605's from the same time period(1960/61) which coincidentally is when the transition from 605A to 605B occurred.

I have been playing the single Laguna. I can't wait to find a mate. The dual 803A speakers bottom end Rocks.
