Altec Lansing 12 inch Single Point Source Full-Range Speakers

Anyone knows what model is this, advertised as "altec lansing 12 inch Single Point Source Full-Range drivers, 1.5 inch tweeter"? How's the sound quality?

That tweeter looks to be derived from the Electrovoice "Superdome".

Given that EV and Altec were under common ownership for a time (Telex)- I'd bet this is the case.

Maybe I can help. I don’t know the model number of your speakers but I am familiar with those 920 drivers. They are full rangers with woofer, mid, and tweeter all contained in a single unit with a crossover network installed adjacent to the large woofer magnet. I got two pair from an audio buddy of mine who saved about 20 of them from a dumpster after his church changed out their sound system. I installed mine in open baffles and use them outside around my fire pit and patio. I think they sound great including enough bass to satisfy me. And because they’re all self contained, it’s dead simple to cut a circle in plywood and screw these in place.

These 920s were primarily designed to be full range, high quality, PA speakers for commercial applications. Their narrow depth allows easy installation in ceilings and walls. And last time I checked, they were still available for sale to contractors under the Electro Voice brand name. I’ll bet yours sound pretty good. I’m quite happy with mine.

those are not mine, they are on sale in my place, didn't listen to them as they are sold pretty soon. lucky you to have two pairs......
 
Mid-line distributed sound ceiling speaker. Voiced midrange forward, response rolled off heavily on both ends. Fairly useless for hifi without a tweeter and subwoofer. Claimed response is 70 to 15k, they surely are not flat anywhere near as high as 15k.

The first version, 920-8A has a foam surround and looser suspension and will play down to 50hz or so. I think Altec discovered that bass extension was useless for speech intelligibility and revised subsequent issues with a stiffer suspension and higher Fs.

Those speakers were built for a purpose and hifi isn't it.

An EPI 100 or KLH 17 will be a far better balanced and better sounding speaker system for music, consider their value with that in mind.

I have seen an Electrovoice version (the Pro 12A), occasionally here at the shop- but it uses the EV Force 12 basket and magnet, or a University stamped-steel basket, instead of the Altec basket.

I could have sworn there was a pair of the Pro 12As for sale in Bartertown here, but I can't find them in either the active or completed ads there now...
