Altec Lansing 416-8B

I am restoring a pair of Altec Model 19 speakers and would like to keep the 416-8B woofers as close to the original factory specifications as possible. Has anyone here used the 416-8 AMRK aftermarket recone kit from The Speaker Exchange? How satisfied were you with the results? Does it preserve the original sound and performance of the 416-8B?

I used that kit. I have Model 19’s.
To my ears they sound great.
And they look correct.
As I mentioned before you have to modify the dust cap in order to look correct.
Mission knows about this.

I'll be ordering those kits; I can see that the dust cover has ventilation in the center.

A couple of notes.
Their dust cap has a smaller than stock vent and it protrudes. It just looks wrong, so I fixed that.
Also, the outer gaskets are not cork like stock. It’s quite easy to carefully remove and re-use the originals.
Not sure on yours as they have been rebuilt once already.

Okay, I'll keep that in mind.
I already removed the cone it had; that one was really ugly. It also had a poor-quality voice coil made of copper wire wound around a plastic cone, and it measured 8.9 ohms, making the woofer sound very weak. Now I want to bring it back to life.

The kits you bought are edgewound copper clad alum. The form is Kapton, not paper like the originals.
The winding length is also longer than the original. Here is a photo:




I never got to see what GPA was using in their kits way back when. Kapton is pretty much std now days.

I’m just an Amatuer who wanted to learn this process.

Who is the manufacturer of the 416-8 AMRK recone kit? Our parts supplier receives the parts from different supplier here in the United States.

Does it use an edge-wound aluminum ribbon voice coil like the original Altec 416-8B? Yes

Is the voice coil made with flat aluminum wire? Yes

Is the cone assembly designed to match the original Altec 416-8B moving mass and compliance? Yes

If you have another recone kit that more closely matches the original Altec 416-8B specifications, I would appreciate your recommendation. No, this is the closest recone kit we can get to the original.
