Altec Lansing 845B

I've read and used AK for years but today is my first post so yay!

I saved an Altec Lansing 845B "The Verde" from going to trash at my school (there used to be an old radio station on-site). I can find no information on the 845B online other than it's super close to the 835 due to the drivers being the same.

The speaker is in good condition (internals are great condition) other than one side being destroyed and the rheostat/pot having gone bad.

I've hooked up the speaker to my Sansui R-411 and it sounds really smooth and natural so I plan to build a cabinet in the same style.

Does anyone else have these speakers or have any thoughts on it?

The tweeter has collector value in that it is uncommon, and unique in design as the cone uses no surround.

Sadly, much of the value was in the cabinet, and that's mostly gone at this point.

They were a more economical alternative to the Lido and Melodist, pretty much bottom of the Altec line in that era.

I'm planning to build a new cabinet; Could I use a hardwood such as Walnut or should I stick to plywood?

Also, I'm struggling to find a replacement pot for the tweeter control. Will any 25ohm pot work or is there a specific one I should be looking for?

Use plywood or MDF. Hardwood isn’t stable enough.
