Altec Lansing 846 B Valencia Speakers - $1700 ? Is this good?

But wow these look beautiful!

I hope to hear from you guy's or gal's about the value of these and ..
Just how good are they?

Seems rather expensive to me. Missing the grills also. If your looking for speakers like this keep an eye out for some HeathKit AS101's, basically the same Altec driver load in nicer cabinets.

Well I had 846A Valencia with grilles for 1600.00 on BT and no one wanted them. If that’s an indicator.

I had 878b for $700 that took forever to sell a few years ago — they were in fantastic condition and im the kind of seller who casts a wide net and takes pretty pictures

A pair of 416-8B woofers with original and proper working cones are definitely worth a premium these days. Only a handful or two of 846B's came with them.

As much as i don't like it, that price probably isn't that far over the top. The seller knows what he has.

Judging by the foam around the horn the seller is likely a former AKer or similar audio fanatic.

I just did a whole Valencia rework of the Heathkit branded version from Jan - Memorial Day this year.
I got mine cheaper AND mine had been owned by the President of Heathkit!
This one seems awful pricey - but there are folks who price high. Not the first time.

Agree with hardy - I also think that the A variant would command a bit higher price and personally have the A-variant (green drivers) Flamenco's

For those not in the loop with Altec values here's what GPA is currently getting for their new production 416-8B, this is one of 2 recently completed sales on ebay:

Again, i would strongly opine that the woofers alone in the OP speakers are worth north of what this audience would pay for any version of complete Valencia. Don't believe me? Try and buy a pair of proper working 416-8B with original undamaged cones. The new ones from GPA are the next best thing. There's a reason the price/value is where it is compared to the other 416 variants. Those who have experienced or lived with the difference are willing to pay the price.

There are 2 value keys to any of the Altec beasts of yesteryear.

The first is obviously the types of drivers and their condition. Those of us who got pairs cheaply often found issues with the crossover if we were lucky, or with the drivers themselves if we were unlucky. Repairing or replacing the woofers can get real expensive.

The second is how the speakers look. In perfect shape many of the cabinets are beautiful. But they can look pretty bad if the cabinets have seen the elements. The wood grilles are a particular pain to refurb if missing chunks (this may be why the grilles are missing). And some of the styles didn't age well, which is why some of the MCM Altec cabinet models command such a high price.
