Currently I'm using Altec Lansing ADA880 5.1 PC speakers as my main speaker system while the other components & speakers are being restored.
The subwoofer on this system has decent quality and good output. It's great for surround sound movies. That was its original use. But the satellite speakers were really crap. Therefore I've been using some very nice sounding KLH bookshelf speakers on the fronts and some fairly decent Harmon Kardon speakers for the rear satellites, which are normally not used except for movies.
The system sounds quite good overall with the other speakers. It also has quite good output for what it is: (Supposedly 80W total or 10W per speaker + 40W sub. But that's at 0.1% distortion)
I've never cracked open the sub with the amp or seen a wiring diagram. But the IC amp inside has quite a lot of distortion. Especially compared to an audiophile preamp/amp like my Haflers...
I'm wondering if anyone here has any ideas for upgrades to the power amp on this system, or has ever attempted to upgrade a computer speaker system amp like in this one?
