ALTEC LANSING MODEL 19 SPEAKERS

Hey out there! I am thinking about buying a pair of Altec Lansing 19 speakers from a local guy. He is asking $1500.00 and they look to be in nice shape after looking at the pics. I haven't heard them yet. I hope to get him to knock a few bucks off of the price. Anyway can I get some opinions? I have a set of Mac 30's and Fisher 90c pre-amps to run them. Right now I have some Pioneer HPM-150's that I re-capped that are sounding great. What to do?

Great speakers. $1,500 is a steal if everything is correct and clean. Great midrange. Great on tubes.

Great amp/pre setup there for 19's, very good price if everything is original in good condition, act fast.
 
You can't go wrong given the gear you have to drive them, they will need a little room to breathe.
 
I had a set a few years back- truly a great, two way, audio system! If everything is working as it should, not a bad price either.

There are thoughts here on AK (welcome BTW) regarding modifications such as Durst foams to set around the hors, packing the horn body to reduce ring thru, x-over modifications, and more. Look around here on AK for those posts. Good luck with the purchase.

In my opinion and experience the 19 is possibly the finest all in one box, turnkey speaker ever made and at the least it's one that can stand it's ground with top shelf modern speakers. I think they should be brought up to original performance but not modified---drivers and original crossover brought up to snuff or replaced with a GPA Model 19 crossover, foam around horn replaced if missing and that's that.
 
Nice big speaker for a nice big room. Got a used pair of VOTT in 1971 but sold a year later. Always wanted 19's - in oak.
 
They work in rooms that are smaller than optimum as well. Their ability to throw a realistic soundstage in front of the speakers is unparalleled in my experience. Simply wonderful speakers.
 
Great speakers, get to listen at a friends house often! Don't wait, just do it! Will sound great with your set up.

Where can I get the Durst foam for the horns? Can I use speaker cabinet foam insulation from Parts Express? And by the way I picked them up for $1300.00! But I had to repatriate them back from Canada. The customs agent asked me a lot of questions. LOL
 
I appreciate all of the comments. Here is a pic of them. I am getting a lot of responses about a recap on the other site. I guess I just need more info on specific mods to do to the crossovers. An old post but did you ever get those 19's finished? I have a set i bought in arkansas and brought them into canada also. Haseled at the border too.lol

On my list of 'holy grail' items of yesteryear, including Marantz 9, Tannoy Westminster royals, Thorens reference, Nelson pass '2352', Cell audio palette, etc.

ok, maybe 2nd tier to the tannoys, but up there in my desired list along with spendor and Harbeth, and perhaps Stanley kubricks f 0.7 lens for good measure.
 
I am not the greatest fan of the Altec sectoral horns, but that said a model 19 is the best sounding Altec system using those horns. You might want to restore the crossovers by replacing the caps, etc. After that maybe getting a new pair of Diaphragms from Great Plains audio might help, too. Room placement is critical with these speakers and your listening position. I wouldn't sit to close. I owned Carmels at one time. two 12's versus a single 15 with out the special circuit to make the HF flat, and really. enjoyed them until I heard a pair of Bozak Contemporary Symphonies. The Altecs were gone the next day. The bass and midrange just didn't compare/. Yes I know the Altecs were 5 db more efficient but my MC 240 was more than enough.
