Good day everyone,
I have a chance to purchase a pair of mint, original owner Altec Lansing Model 8 speakers for $400. They were purchased new back in 1989. I have no idea about these speakers sound quality and signature, as they are quite uncommon and difficult to find info/reviews. Will you guys give me your opinions of this speaker and advise if this is a deal or not? I have never owned a pair of "full-range" 3-way speakers styled like this before. I currently use a pair of Spica Angelus and EPI 201's and am curious if these will sound pleasing compared to my other models. Thanks in advance.

Certainly not Altec's "worst" speaker. But, far from their best.

100$ for a pair in good to excellent condition would be about the top of the price/value scale IMO. $400 is ludicrous and IMO wouldn't be justified even if they were still brand new in sealed boxes.

Keep shopping!

That said, this thread will be moved to the Dollars and Sense forum as it's a valuation question.

Thanks for the info so far. How would these compare to the popular jbl l100 speakers? They look somewhat similar.

Probably a bit more "honest" in the mid/treble range than the L100 with solid bass that extends well. But, in a direct comparison the L100 bass will likely be a clear winner overall and may be enough to give it clear advantage over the Altec.

Just my .02............

Hasn't this already been covered?

I discovered the other thread after I had already started this one. So yes, it has been talked about and I have made my decision to keep looking.

I am now looking into possibly some NHT 2.5i speakers that I have found locally for $400. Seems to be a much better speaker for the money.
