Altec project, in theory....

timofred

I'm just a garbage man...
I have recently got some Valencia's, and for the moment am enjoying them in the original configuration.
Then I started thinking...
I also have a pair of 411-8A and pair of 420A
Is there a way to incorporate all into a single cabinet ?
I know the 411 and 420 like a sealed cab, can they share the same space ?
is the 416 good for open baffle ?

First idea is, 416 on top
horn
420
411 at bottom

Getting the LF drivers wired series / parallel to end up at 16ohm and utilizing active crossover at 1000 Hz

Is there something fundamentally wrong with this idea ?

Cheers, Timo.

Big sensitivity mismatch between the 411's and the 416 /420. 411's really need to be in their own space with their own dedicated and filtered amplifier channels.

I can't think of any good reason to wire good Altec drivers in series.

The 420 does very well in certain back loaded horns, there are some smaller audio circles in Eastern Europe that have grown quite fond of the 420 in this application. Because of it's unique sonic signature and extended range, it does best as the main component of a speaker system. It's a very worthy driver by it's own merits. But, i cannot think of any practical way to integrate in in a larger speaker system. I just wouldn't even try, they're not bringing anything to the table that the 416 and horn haven't already. The 420 was an economic alternative for those who hadn't the funds or space for a full on iconic 2-way system like the Valencia.

There was something produced with a 15" and 12" woofers in the same cabinet. A web search may find it unless another respondent knows where it is. I see no reason to put it above the horn.

Thanks bowtie,
I can always rely on the experience of Americans when it comes to altec info.

FWIW, this could be as simple as one big sealed box and the biggest subwoofer plate amp you can get, or two sealed boxes and two medium sized plate amps.
