Altec Lansing used to be such a Good Company...then It started turning to crap when James B Lansing died. Same with JBL it is starting to go down hill [In My Opinion]

Mr. Lansing committed suicide in 1949. In the late 1970's Altec Lansing was producing the model 19 and the 604-8G studio monitor, arguably the 2 finest and most respected speaker systems Altec ever produced. The 604-8G is to many, the pinnacle of 3 previous decades of domination in the professional studio recording/monitoring world. The model 19 enjoyed the same status in the "hifi" market, and both models are highly sought after and command a premium to this day.

I would argue that the Altec Corporation enjoyed a long stretch of years(decades), and several changes of hand after James Bullough Lansing's passing before their products became anything of the "crap" sort.

Jim Lansing left Altec Lansing in 1946, at the expiration of a contract he signed when selling the original Lansing Manufacturing Company to Altec. He then founded Lansing Sound, Inc., annoyed his previous employers with the name, settled for using the name "James B. Lansing Sound, Inc." That company started accruing debts, and Mr. Lansing committed suicide in 1949. In a tragic irony, Mr. Lansing's life insurance policy gave the company enough capital to survive and grow.

I would add that only the home products became "crap" under Sparkomatic and whoever now owns the Altec Lansing name for home products. The professional division is back in business, and GPA carried on the old Altec Lansing tradition of quality manufacturing.

True enough until very recent years.

The nauseating reality is that today much of the pro stuff, even examples designed by Bill at GPA, are now made in China. A couple examples i'd cite are the CD-1012 based on the "Engine", and the 604-8L, they may as well be branded Behringer now, IMHO.

The new 604s are being made in China instead of OKC? :(
AFAIK, only recent versions of the 604-8L branded "Altec Lansing Professional".

GPA products are all still and always will be made in OKC to the best of my knowledge.

It's important to note that Altec Pro is now owned by the folks in Milford, PA, the same folks that import the computer/gaming speakers and ipod docks.

I have not personally seen a made in china 604L, but i think somebody posted a pic of one on the altec board within the last few months.

I have indeed had my eyes and hands on Chinese CD1012's, they "looked" to be every bit the quality you'd expect from a made in USA Altec, but looks only run skin deep at best. I'd like to have a pair to "play" with for a while.
