altec speakers

recently got an old set of altec speakers it has a 10 inch main driver with a small metal horn the 10 is in a cast frame they work and sound quite good i am not familiar witth altec and these have no model no.and appear to be mid 60's and as soon as i have time ill post pics just looking for some info on altec in general or if these sound familiar to anyone just let me say they are some of the best sounding iv heard very crisp.also just trying to gage the value.

Once we can see what you have, we can let you know what you've got. Any old classic Altecs have value, are well sought after, and sound great. It really is hard to beat that wonderful Altec sound..
 
the altecs that i posted about yesterday i have pulled the backs off and identified they contain a 12 inch driver marked 414-z now i still cant find a modelno. on the horn witch is small and after doing some research on them the cabs look just like the valecia(think i spelled it wrong)only smaller ,sorry i havent posted pics having trouble with that.but anyway if this rings a bell with anyone be happy with some imput .they sound great would like to refurbish them as the cabs are really beat up and one the 12's is dented and got wet still plays but is duller sounding then the other. thanx
 
thanx from all the info iv got from u guys they are sevilles ,now the impedence being 16ohms dont have a tube amp to run them and am running them with a pioneer ht receiver set at 6ohms can switch to 8 was using my marantz 1070 but they came of quite harsh actualy sound better and cleaner through the ht what route shuold i take here so as not to damage anything and maxamize whith what i have
 
It is lower ohm ratings that cause problems, higher ones are less likely to damage an amp so you should be fine. :thmbsp:

Disconnect the tweeters and crossovers, and use the woofers and cabs as bass bins for EconoWave.

If you want to restore them, ask over on the Altec Forum how best to proceed with that. The statistics are not good with respect to "Rocking out" with those tweeters, but there is renewed interest on several forums with respect to using 414 woofers for DIY.... :yes:
 
sad thing is the cabs are shot water damage tops are warped will have to rebuild 80% of them mdf and re vaneer and recone the one 12 it still sounds good but it did get wet and took some o the lively sound away like the other has but this is my first listening of altec vintage and like it alot was going to get some klipsch heresy though iv never heard them but have overwhelming great reveiws but now want to get deeper in the altec thing
