Hi, I was looking for some Dynaco A25's but have someone offering me a pair of Altec Model Seven speakers...Does anyone have any experience at all with these? I'm looking for a nice jump up from my Epi 100v's (which i like..i just want a nice second set of speaker)...any info on the altec brand? Thanks!

The Sevens are OK, but far, far from Altec's best.
I wouldn't really consider them much of a step up from the EPI 100 in terms of accurate sound quality (though they're definitely nicer cosmetically than the 100V).

I was thinking about getting a pair of Altec Valencias until I started reading about people who have them, some of them, really don't like the sound of em all that much. Not very good highs and lows. Never heard them or even seen a pair myself.

Just super lookin speakers with the grills off. They sure got the 'look'.

If any of you guys have Valencias...please tell us how 'you' like them. Maybe the other guys just have faulty speakers or something.

I love them.

Indeed, they are not extended at either end of the spectrum, and they have the traditional Voice of the Theatre midrange bump (engineered in quite deliberately, since VOTs were designed to project through a motion picture screen). They're designed to reproduce extremely clean and articulate vocals... and they do that in spades.

How would you compare them to more common 2way bookshelves of the time..like Dynaco a25's or EPI?

What have you compared them to? Thanks!

I love mine, really love mine. I have heard what you read as well. Bottom line, get what you like, not what everyone else says.

As to a comparison for bookshelves, can't help you there. I can tell you I like my altecs better tahn the cornwalls I had. The bass isn't as deep, but it is considerably stronger. I think the highs/mids are cleaner and more open than the cornwalls too.

The valencia's are now my all time favorite speaker.

Ditto on that. I loved my vertical Cornwalls, and knew that they were the best Klipsch for me. Then I heard the Valencia- It has a ton less "cringe factor", clearly a better pitched and proportioned bass, and much better mid-range. The entire range is un-mucked-up comparatively. I now am listening to entire pieces of music and realizing that that was not happening with the Klipsches, of which I have recently owned Forte I, II, Chorus II, and the CORNWALLS, which stood above the others.

Yes on the mixed approval of Valencias -- the problems with them are obvious, and not hard to ignore, whereas the immediacy and tactility they have simply aren't there with many other speakers. So listening is a must -- you may like them or not.
But as to the OP's question: I had a pair of the Nines, and my response to your question is dependent on what sort of music you listen to (though the rest of your system matters too). If you listen to rock or jazz, or small scale percussive music that is typically recorded up close, I think you will like them more than EPIs. But if you listen to large scale stuff -- orchestras and so on that are recorded at a distance -- or if you listen a lot to piano or voice, than the neutrality of the EPI might be important.
Of course both is a good answer also...

What are the problems with sound quality the Valencias, or Altec in general? I've never heard a pair but what are the complaints some people have with the sound? Love em or hate em. What is it that some people don't like about the sound?

Is it because they are so old or was this the way they always have been since new?

:scratch2:

re: Valencias and their ilk.

They have pronounced midrange and rolled off low and high ends. Are they accurate? No. Are they sublime? Yes. YMMV, of course.

You cannot paint all Altec, even vintage Altec, with one brush. The earlier-mentioned cone-driver Altec bookshelf speakers are not in the same league as the Altec studio and theater speakers.

That pronounced midrange is at least partly responsible for what's good about Valencias, which is the insight into what all the instruments are doing -- most of the music is in the midrange, and if you get that right, its pretty appealing. But it comes at the cost overshadowing what's going on in the bass, and the rolled off high end diminishes the sense of reality -- I'd say they lay out what is going better than most speakers, but it doesn't actually sound accurate or real. It's possible to overstate this, and on some pieces of music they can sound very convincing. But more often, for me, they are exciting, and a good tool for seeing what each instrument is doing, but I don't get as strong a sense as some speakers create that I'm listening to real people playing real instruments.
By the by -- I've just been listening to some Coronas (Altecs early 70s two way cone baby) and this seems to be doubly so for them -- on rock they sound big and fun, but on classical, though you can hear lots of detail, they are almost unlistenably colored.

Point/Counter-Point :-)

It's interesting that our opinions on these are so divergent Nat. I agree with everything you say quantitatively about the VOT clan ('specially the Valencias, which really do fail to deliver any deep bass)... I just disagree with the impact of the qualitative result!

I think it's just one of those de gustibus non est disputandum things... indeed, Nat and I share more opinions on good sounding speakers than disagreements thereupon. :-)

I'll bet that you really don't care for Klipsch Cornwalls!

I have rebuilt several of these vintage, smaller, Altec products including the 5,9 & 7. I like them to be honest. The have a smooth near natural sound, even with or because of their paper cone tweeter. The cabinetry is quite nice finished on 5 and even 6 sides with good thick veneer. I do find that when the net work is tweaked with new poly caps they certainly come to life!

If given the choice I would opt for the Altec here. I like the sound of a well made small 3 way and Altec did it all well as many others- not to an exception, just as nice.

Actually, I don't think our opinions diverge much -- we are both using Valencias, which says more about our agreement than our comments do. And you have evened out the frequency response with a subwoofer and supertweeter, which ameliorates the issue of flatness of response.
My comments about the Corona should be taken in the context of what it is -- the baby of the Altec range, and from an earlier era than the 5, 7 and 9 etc. The point I was making was that the family resemblance between the Corona and the Valencia was obvious, but with the Corona, because of neccessary economies, taken to an exagerated degree.

so... last night I was listening to female a cappella (a 50-year compilation of the Mt. Holyoke College Victory-Eights!) on the SCA-35 -> Altec Santiagos (very similar to Valencias, but with sealed boxes and different woofers), just marveling at how well the VOT family "does" vocals. Due to the nature of these recordings, they're minimally processed/gussied up. Some of the better transcriptions sound real. Not "lifelike", or "naturalistic" or "euphonic", but real. In-the-room.

A powerful testimonial with which i can concur.

Is this not the "American dream" for most loudspeaker designers?

There is a "classified ads" section of the Forum and adds are cheap. A real "no hassle" way to sell on AK is to become a subscriber and list your Model 19's in the subscriber's "Bartertown" section of this Forum.

A lot of gear is sold, daily, through the Bartertown section and you'll find that those 19's won't be around long, provided your pricing is right. For information about pricing, you'll want to visit the "Dollars and Sense" section of the Forum and post a thread asking for advice or information.

I would be surprised if you don't get a few PM's asking about condition, price, and your location. Listing your location is a good thing and can be done in the "User Profile" section of the Forum.

FWIW, I have Model 19 components and really like them. Others, here, know them and like them, as well.

Welcome to AK and have some more fun with us audio freaks!
