Altec speakers?????

Hey all im trying to figure out as much information about these speakers as possible. These are on my local C-list.

The guy says they are altec speakers but he doesnt know the model number and there are no pictures of the backs or the speakers inside.

Anyone have any idea if the cabinets are at least Altec from looking at them??

Without more to go on I'd have to say it's possible they're vintage Altecs. Or some other interesting thing to go check out - like Electro-Voice, Jensen, University, and the like.
 
I dont see any additional cutouts for a tweeter or mid horn. Could be some nice coaxials hiding in there. Id grab some money and go have a look. Try to contain yourself if you find an Altec 604 in them.
 
872A Madrid type cabinets. The cabinets from this time period were available empty and with blank baffles that could be cut out to accept a number of drivers.

Given that these are ported, it's likely they;re loaded with 602's or 603's, less likely but still possible 604's.
 
I'm not an Altec expert, but I own a pair of 806A Valencias; those pictured have a vague resemblance but they appear to lack the big horn tweeter. If they truly are Altecs, I think they have a 15" woofer with a CTS paper cone tweeter mounted on a strut across the woofer. IMO, that center line across the front is the strut. I had a similar pair years ago before my Vals. That said, it would be cool if they contained 604s!
 
If you google up Altec 872a Valencia the cabinet is exactly the same without those bass ports at the bottom corners. As the above post points out the driver's front strut looks right. I wonder what other driver might have fit in there that would have wanted a ported cabinet.

Definitely worth checking out in any case.
 
My pair had that silver center dust cap and two section on the cone, the center section was pleated, the outer was smooth; I don't recall the number. The cabinets were big, but not as big as the Vals. They also sounded harsh and shrill, and I sold them soon after I bought them.IMG_20180118_172908.jpg

Yes, the 872 has to be the one I had. In retrospect, if I had known about AK at the time, I would have tamed the tweeters with something to make them smoother. The cabinets were nice, lacked the bowed front, and had the same self-destructing plastic grill. Nice looking, congrats!

Reading over the thread again, I can't explain why I looked up "872a Valencia" anyway since you already said they were 872A Madrids. :dunno: I'm sure I was trying to be helpful. :angel: But it appears that even on my best day I cannot Altec my way out of even the largest vented cabinet.:p

Great googlymoogly. That looks like 1/2" aluminum plate for the front baffle on those 872 Madrids.
