How good are the Altec Lansing bolero 890c speakers? Would they match up well with a pair of McIntosh mc75 amps? What drivers are in them. I have an opportunity to pick up a very nice pair but know nothing about them.

IMO the best small high efficiency speaker ever made and one of the few vintage speakers that can hold it's own with good modern ones. Natural tonal balance, robust and clean bass, midrange of superb clarity and realism but somewhat rolled off highs. Good imaging and good dynamics. Low distortion and excellent clarity. Can be driven to high, low distortion output with low power amplifiers.

The speaker has a <very> high quality 10" woofer-midrange and a good quality horn tweeter that comes in at 2000hz. There is also a 10" passive radiator. The woofer is a glorious example of the speaker making art with a powerful Alnico magnet motor, 3" voice coil and cast frame. And a dual profile cone developed to give the outstanding midrange reproduction of the VOT based Altecs in a small package.

My opinion and experience.

Having a pair, I'd agree with most of what Tom said.

Description of the tonal characteristics is pretty spot on what I hear, other than bass. But, the reduced bass thing I have is almost certainly due to my particular speaker positioning...about midway between floor and ceiling, and away from the wall.

Here is a link to what appears to be Tom Brennan's initial impressions at Lansing Heritage from 2004. I always appreciate Tom's perspective opinions which always seem to be as very objective without biases one way or the other. Based on all my reading here and at Lansing heritage, and Todd Whites host board, he seems to have the experience and knowledge to make credible evaluations and recommendations.
