Alternative to Oppo BDP-203?

Hello there,

I currently have an Oppo BDP-103 feeding a Parasound THX three channel amp, however, I’m looking to get a 4K HDR projector (Epson 5040ub) and I don’t believe my unit supports that.
The BDP-203 is the obvious answer, but prices are obscene and I’m looking to keep this below $500.

Is there anything that provides similar sq with pre outs and 4K HDR? Would I be better off with an HDMI audio extractor/switch and go optical into the Oppo?

The Denon X3500 goes on sale for about $550 at frys semi regularly. Would that fit the bill? I’d just be using it for decoding to my power amp.

Not sure if this has what you want, but it replaced my Oppo 105D as my reference.
SONY UPB X1000ES
I love it.

Thanks, but I’m looking for 5.1 or higher pre outs. I’m sure that’s a great decoder, but it’s only for stereo out. Should’ve mentioned that in my first post!

The 103 is supposed to be able to upscale to 4K. I own one and it shows it in the menu. Have no personal experience with the upscale performance since I don't have a 4K set.

As for UHD units that have the 5.1/7.1 outputs, here is one.

Ok, now I feel like a real picky person, but I should’ve said I don’t watch blu rays! I just use the Oppo as a decoder for my Chromecast Ultra and PS4 Pro. Apparently that is oppos real killer feature!

I had the same question not long ago, and this is the answer I ended up with. I guess when I do go to true 4K sources, I'll have to buy a pre/processor.
Yeah it’s a shame that Oppo stopped making there players and no one so far had succeeded them which leaves a lot of people wanting the oppos but understandably not willing to pay the Absurd prices people are charging now .

That seems nuts!

It seems so simple to just put an HDMI in on one of these other blu ray players...

At any rate, I suppose any AVR with pre outs and HDMI would serve the same purpose. Anybody recommend an AVR with a particularly good DAC? The oppo is way beyond it’s price point I know...

For home theater I use an older although Totl Yamaha RX-Z1 multichannel inputs to my Oppo Udp-203 analog outputs and HDMI straight from the 203 to my LG C-8 Oled. Works excellent and sounds much better than audio over HDMI imo, I’ve tried it both ways on multiple receivers and always preferred the rca route and I still get the latest codecs doing it that way .

What are the connections from your Chromecast Ultra and PS4 Pro? Are they just HDMI only?

Hi Lattiboy,
I just have a quick question, I have an oppo bdp103d and interested in upgrading to the epson 5040ub mfr refurb. I currently have the 5020ub but the dreaded twin red lights are beginning to appear. Will the 5040 display or resolve properly in the oppo, or do i need an oppo firmware upgrade in order to do so? Did you ever pursue the bdp103 - epson 5040UB pairing and did the ‘marriage’ work? Thanks in advance!
