I have not used my smart phone for 2 years,i dont know what or even care about facebook,twit or snapchat.If all cellphone text and related add ons died tomorrow i would not even notice.Im amazed at how addicted people have become to the smartphone .I have a full and busy life and the all mighty phone has zero hold or control over me .Are there others? Am i alone.Computer wise im on here and iboats thats it.I literally just watched a program called marketplace about the smartphone and its hold over people.Some people will spend 9 1/2 years of their life looking at that screen!

I have a smart phone. I think I've made maybe 5 phone calls in the 2 years I've had it. Not quite sure how to use all of the other features.
 
I have a Samsung cellphone since 2009. Since then I used it for about five hours. No kidding. I do not know just now if it is still working.

I use the internet: AudioKarma, from time to time News, amazon, Ebay, Wikipedia.

That's all.
 
I Hate those damn phones, the other day went to dad's to have a cup of coffee. And it was my sister, niece and the old man, with their phone and the same table.
People in general keeps pushing to get one(even give me phones)... mine is dumb as a rock.:rolleyes:
Having said that, I can see some good things about those devices, I found cool how a lot of things can be fit in that same pack.
 
I'm in a situation where I have to rely on it for work, out in "the field", taking and sending pics, email, texts, looking up records and on and on.
But I'm getting to the point where if some function starts acting up, I don't bother trying to fix it. Screw it.
 
I have a cellphone I play games on and I only give out the number to a select few people in case of an emergency. I don't do Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media. AK, eBay and some music and book research sites are about all I do on the computer.

As far as I'm concerned, the art of conversation is dying where it involves actually talking to someone face to face. I love setting up at the flea market because there are many people my age who aren't staring at a phone and actually spend time shooting the breeze.
 
I do not have my smartphone for two years yet, so the OP is still ahead of me.
I guess is one call every two weeks, internet once a month, whatsapp twice a week.

For me, it is some insurance thing, since it can be very handy, when experiencing whatever problems.

Anyway, driving around Madeira (a mountainous island) my navigation device sent me wrong way all the time, so it was very handy to have the GPS navigation on the phone.

At work, use the flashlight led now and then, and take a picture when seeing something one needs to remember.
I think it makes me not stupid nor smart

Yes on that program i mentioned they asked people to give up their cellphone for awhile.Most couldnt do it they just turned to nervous wrecks.I would go as far as to say if for some reason tomorrow all cell service ended suicides would increase a thousand fold or more.I hunt and fish a fair bit so you would think a cell would be handy but to the west of me and north off the highway their totally useless.I cant even rationalize a safety argument for one in my situation.I do use a handheld gps which with my offroad map apps is a million times better than a cell phone.Has rescue feature also.

It´s a very usefull tool that I would not want to be without.

edit: Something just occured to me; a lot of people complain about smart phones, which I

understand to a point. And then there are people who are here at AK practically 24/7.

Isn´t that just as bad?

I don't even own a cell, though my wife has one I could borrow. There are certainly some good aspects to them and I should probably get one just for the safety aspect when traveling. For the 'net and design work, old fingers and old eyes like a nice big desktop, a nice big monitor and a nice big mouse.

So you have mastered your smartphone, and not vice versa. I wish there were more smartphone users like you.
 
I usually turn mine on to see if the battery needs charging. I seldom use mine. I have 5 gig of data on my plan, but never use more than 2 mb. Annoying if you ask me.
 
I found found my smartphone damn useful because it has all kinds of crap shoved in it. I have a mount for my bike, so I can use it as a gps. Without it i'd often get lost on the hills I cycle on. The internet keeps me from getting bored at times, reading the news or some forums. The email service made it a lot easier to read the mail when a PC is not available. Also when dealing with vintage stuff it makes it easy to find out what I am looking at. And it has a flashlight too! Without it I would need a few more devices, some expensive (have you seen how much a cycling gps costs?) so it keeps things simple and cheap.
I don't use social media of any kind though, and could care less about where x has spent his weekend or what slimy food Y has cooked.
A smartphone should be making our lives easier, not keep us glued to facebook or instagram taking and uploading hundreds of pictures who nobody cares about
 
I check the news at breakfast and lunch, and take a quick look at AK to see if something´s new.

When we drive to a construction site in the morning, and back to the shop in the evening, the apprentice who is with me is glued to his phone.

And sometimes, when ho goes out to the truck to get something, he´s walking head down , glued to his phone. I guess I´m too old to understand this.
 
No smart phone here. Occasionally I wouldn't mind having one to be able to get on the net while I'm away from the computer, but not enough for me to justify having a big cell phone bill to pay. I have a basic $15 Tracfone that makes calls and texts. It's all I really need. It actually stays turned off most of the time. No monthly bill. A $20 minute card lasts me 3 months before I need a new one. I don't use Assbook, Twitter or any of the other social media BS either.
