American Acoustics D5550E?

Came accross a pair of these for sale locally. In pictures they look nice, but I don't know if they are worth a darn. They are conventional 4-way, 10" woofer, floorstanding speakers. Searching the web brings up American Acoustics Design (AAD) and a warning about imitations/fakes. Speaker looks like nothing from their current catalog, but they are at least 7 years old according to the seller.

Would I be wasting my time to drive 30+ miles to check these out?

TIA,
Junior

I think I still have a pair of 5550's (no E), a 12-inch woofer, though. I wouldn't drive out of my way for 'em. They're not bad, mind you, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Save your money and look some more is my suggestion.
Good hunting, Junior!

American Acoustics was a division of Mitek Corp., the parent company of MTX.

I've had a couple pairs of those '5550s around, refoaming and such... 12" woofer, 5" mid, 2.5" cone tweeter, and a horn peizo supertweeter, IIRC. Not a bad speaker. Basically virtually indestructable, GREAT party speaker. Nowhere near "audiophile hi-fi" sound quality, but they will crank up AC/DC without fail, and make a pretty satisfyingly punchy experienceout of it.

OTOH, the American Acoustics 693 was a piece of unmitigated bull$#it... 12" 3-way, with a 12" woofer containing a magnet that's smaller than most white-van speaker drivers! World's WORST 12" woofer, IMHO!

Regards,
Gordon.

Thanks guys! Thats what I needed to know... I was thinking maybe these were of the white van variety themselves. Might make a decent garage/workshop speaker for me, but definitely not for the TOTL system I want to build.

Damn how I love this place already! Audiokarma rocks!

Junior
