american monitor advice?

namaste karma-land,

i'm a new participant but longtime reader of ak and i'm looking forward to getting involved.

anybody know much about american monitor speakers? i've read a few threads from years past, but they seem to be fairly obscure/rare. does anybody know much about the model 14s? there's a craigslist ad for a pair of am-14 speakers near me and the guy is asking $100 (firm.) i'd be driving them with a pioneer sx-450 for the downstairs of my house. i'm wondering what kind of match that might make and whether one bill is a square deal. thanks for any input and advice, amigos.

Welcome to AK I know nothing of these speakers, but with a little research they might be interesting. There is a pair on eBay right now, well a pair of 14XL's so who knows if they are similar. I say take your receiver and hook them up before you buy.

If they are truly white van speakers, your $100 would be much better spent elsewhere. You can find a lot on CL for that amount.

I've owned one pair and just last week saw another pair (different model) in a thrift store for $50. I can't recall either model number.

Very nice veneer and decent binding post were common to both. That's really about the best I can say about them. IIRC they were made in Kentucky.

The pair I owned just sounded so~so. I really felt like they were trying to emulate the looks of the JBL L100 and succeeded to an extent, lookswise anyway.

If the pair in the thrift store were $25 instead of $50, I'd buy them and rebaffle the cabinets to make an attractive pair of subwoofers.

thanks gang. not surprisingly the cl ad adamantly declares "these are *not* white van speakers! these are rare beauties!" etc etc. i think i'm going to pass for now and see what else is out there--esp after the holidays.
